Lily asks Tom to do the job.(original) From the original , in order to emphasize the Tom(Tom functions as the subject of the original), or when Lily is the agent of the verb "asks" we can say: 1. Tom is asked by Lily to do the job. 2. Tom is asked to do the job by Lily. 3. Tom is asked to do the job. Now, if we want "the job" to function as the subject of the original, what can we rewrite it as? I guess such as: 4. The job is asked to do by Tom by Lily. 5. The job is asked by Lily Tom to do. 6. The job is to be done by Tom whom Lily asks. 7. The job is to be done by Tom whom is asked by Lily to do so. 8. The job is done by Tom who is asked by Lily to do. Question: Which is/are grammatically correct of 1→8?

The job is to be done by Tom … at Lily’s request. at the request of Lily. as Lily has requested. The job should/might be done by Tom because Lily has asked him to do it. The job will be done by Tom because Lily has ordered him to do it. There are many possibilities depending on the type of request and how likely Tom is to fulfill the request.

All the sentences use poor style. Try to use the style SUBJECT + VERB + OBJECT. Lily asks (or "asked" or "has asked") Tom to do the job. 4-8 make no sense because a job cannot be asked. Rather, it is the "doing" of the job that can be requested. The following is poor style but grammatically correct: That Tom do the job has been requested by Lily. Note the use of "do" rather than "does". That is known as "subjunctive mood". Written with better style, the sentence would be "Lily has requested that Tom do the job."

Keep in mind that the passive voice, which all of these are in, is generally frowned upon. Also, the use of simple present is not very common. That said: 1. Tom is asked by Lily to do the job. Correct 2. Tom is asked to do the job by Lily. Correct 3. Tom is asked to do the job. Correct Now, if we want "the job" to function as the subject of the original, what can we rewrite it as? I guess such as: 4. The job is asked to do by Tom by Lily. Incorrect 5. The job is asked by Lily Tom to do. Incorrect 6. The job is to be done by Tom whom Lily asks. Correct maybe, but very awkward 7. The job is to be done by Tom whom is asked by Lily to do so. Correct, also awkward 8. The job is done by Tom who is asked by Lily to do. Incorrect. You cant' say "The job is asked to do". You could say something like "The job is requested."
