Einiger meiner Erinnerungen von meiner Kindheit
[Danke fuer irgendeine Korrigierung.

Shakespearean idioms suitable for IELTS task 2 essays: Idiom 1: "A sea change"
Meaning: "A dramatic change"
Example: Over the last few decades, there has been a sea change in attitudes towards residential care for elderly people. While in the past, it was mostly unacceptable, it is now very common in many countries.
Usage note: change IN something (not OF)
Feel free to post your own examples and give each other encouraging feedback. I will check too.
Good luck with your preparation.

Learning from an IELTS band 9 model formal letter task 1 (general)
I wrote an answer to the question below in 12 minutes and it has been graded as band 9 by an experienced fellow IELTS tutor - see his comments below. In this task, the writer has some problems with his or her rented house and needs the property agency to take action. One way to learn from my answer is focus specifically on how my points:
1. deal directly with the task instructions, and
2. progress the situation.
Task: You rent a four-bedroom house, which you share with two other students. However there are several problems with this house that need fixing. You also find it expensive and would like to find another student to share the spare bedroom
Write a letter to the estate agency. In the letter,

explain your situation

describe the problems with the house

say what you would like to happen

Begin your letter as follows
Dear Sir or Madam
Answer
My name is Michael Chambers and I am one of the three tenants of 48 Elm Tree Close, a property that you manage. I am writing on behalf of all three of us.
The most pressing reason for writing to you now is that the house has two main repair problems that we need you or the landlords to attend to urgently. Firstly, one of the pipes in the bathroom is leaking and this is causing damage to the carpet in that room. The other serious issue is that there are no smoke alarms fitted, which is against the law.
As well as dealing with the repair issues, we would also like you to do what you can to find a tenant for the fourth bedroom as soon as possible. We are all currently struggling financially to cover the rent for the whole property.
Could you please contact me as soon as possible to arrange a meeting with all of us to discuss the issues in this letter? I would be happy to liaise with my fellow tenants to agree on a suitable time and date.
Yours faithfully,
Michael Chambers [

Feedback: "Yes, I'd give it a Band 9. Here's how it relates to the assessment criteria.
TA - the letter "clearly presents a fully developed response" - in other words, it responds fully to the bullet points. At Band 8, it would be a "sufficient" response, but I felt the letter was more than that.
CC - the letter 'flows' from point to point, and it's easy to follow the points. Also, the cohesion "attracts no attention" - in other words, I don't notice it, mainly because it's very natural.
LR - no errors. It's also "natural and sophisticated" vocabulary:
- "The most pressing reason for writing to you now"
- "we need you or the landlords"
- "do what you can to find a tenant"
- "We are all currently struggling financially"
As you can see, these are phrases - LR is partly about using phrases, rather than individual words.
GR - no errors. Natural and flexible use of structures.

IELTS Writing task 2: use your imagination to plan better ideas
One of the main reasons for irrelevant, repetitive or unclear ideas in task 2 essays is that candidates do not think enough about the subject matter of the question.
Most task 2 questions are based on the everyday experience of people e.g. going to university, raising children, travelling to work.
So when you start planning your ideas in those first 10 minutes before you start writing, put yourself in the shoes of the people who have a strong interest in the topic and who have to make wise, balanced decisions. Some examples:
employers, commuters, parents, factory managers, government ministers or advisers.
For example: whose shoes could you put yourself in, for this question:
Some people believe that schools should choose students according to their abilities, while other people think students with different abilities should learn together. Discuss both views and give your opinion. [scroll down for answer]
My answer: senior teachers, parents, children, government ministers.

IELTS Writing task 2 tip: Plan from the specific to the general: Write from the general to the specific
Consider this example question:
Some people believe that nowadays we have too many choices. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
Planning
My real life situation: “I go to the supermarket and I see a lot of types of pasta. It takes me a long time to compare them all.”
Planning from specific to general:
pasta …is a type of
packaged food…. found in
supermarkets… which is relevant to
retail sector / selling food
Sample body paragraph
“One area of life in which many people have too much choice is shopping for food. For example, many supermarkets in developed countries have a huge variety of packaged food, such as pasta. Consumers can find that they spend a long time checking different products, which often look very similar, and consequently waste time. In this case, the wide choice is not helpful to consumers.”
I have now written most of one paragraph if I have a 4-para structure or a whole paragraph if I use a 5-para structure.
Extra tip: We could make the para above into one with 90 to 100 words by extending it at the end.
“In contrast, shoppers can feel more than satisfied with, say two or three varieties of pasta, which they can consider in more detail and much faster than they can with a huge range of the same type of product.”

"und dann schickt es mich in den April": Lyrics to understand
"es beschleicht mich wieder das Gefühl
fragt mich leise was ich wirklich will
und dann schickt es mich in den April und sagt "ha’m wir nicht da!"
https://lyricstranslate.com/en/das-gefuehl-feeling.html
I am trying to understand the whole sense of this song by Annett Louisan, and also the meaning of the individual words and ideas. I don't understand the reference to April here. Is there a German idiom about "sending you to April", or something like that? Or perhaps the use of "April" is just a metaphor to indicate how a feeling can take hold of you, suddenly send you a very different place (=April) and then disappoint you?
Any ideas appreciated and thank you for reading this in English. Feel free to answer in German or English.

IELTS writing task 2: typical mistake of candidates related to logic
A typical reason why candidates stay stuck at 6 or 6.5 in IELTS writing is that they write main points in their task 2 which are in fact benefits and drawbacks, rather than answer the specific question. This can mean that some of their content is irrelevant. They make this mistake because they have not analysed the question logically enough.
I will explain what I mean with two examples, one using a question adapted from a real one, and then later with a simple example relating to coffee and tea. By the end, you should be able to understand this important point well.
Q: There is no reason to have traditional lectures any more because we now have technology for education. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Less good main point: I agree that traditional lectures can no longer be justified because some students live far from universities and it is much easier for them to learn using technology.
Better main point: I agree that traditional lectures are no longer necessary because students can learn exactly the same content with the aid of technology.
The reason in the bad point is “students from all over the world can watch online lectures whenever they want”. This is in fact an advantage of learning online or a good reason why learning online should be an option. However, it does not clearly explain why traditional lectures are no longer necessary. The point does not compare the two learning options, which is what we have to do to answer this question to the very high standard that band 7 requires.
The better main point is a relevant one because we can see clearly that learning with technology does the same job as traditional lectures, in terms of giving knowledge. If option A and option B do the same thing, then we can say that we do not need both of them – one is enough.
Here is another, more basic example:
Bad point: “Everyone should drink coffee and not tea because coffee is tasty and refreshing.
Better point: “Everyone should drink coffee and not tea because coffee is much tastier and more refreshing than tea.”
This coffee/tea example shows the same mistakes with logic as the first example. In the bad point, we have said why coffee is good, or what the benefits of coffee are. But we have not compared it with tea and so we have not persuaded anyone that they should not need drink tea.
Of course, some questions do ask for benefits and drawbacks, in which case this is exactly what you should write about.
