Karen has a way of calming the nerves and opening up conversation. She's very patient, encouraging and pushes you past your fears. I think the key to the communicative method is overcoming anxiety of conversation, then communicating in the simplest ways. You will surprised how much Spanish you actually know when you try to communicate simply and build your vocabulary & grammar bit by bit. Karen has a depth of knowledge of a lot of topics and has traveled a lot. She understands the life of a traveler and cultural differences. I'm surprised after every class she's shared memes & videos for every topic. When I first started learning Spanish, I started with grammar structures and conjugation tables. I didn't get far, even though I studied for 2 hours everyday for 2 months. I wish I found Karen before and started with the communicative method - it would've saved me a lot of time and money.

I have had over 300 classes on Italki now, and Karen is by far one of the coolest teachers I have had the pleasure of chatting with. She has such a vibrant energy and you always leave feeling positive about your Spanish - learning more each time about the language and the culture it is embedded within. I think she has a natural gift to connect with other people, she is incredibly genuine and kind. You feel so comfortable making mistakes, and for this reason, the subsequent process of learning is an enjoyable and relaxed experience. Classes with her are always fun and engaging, and I feel lucky to have someone so cool as a tutor. Since starting classes with her, I have felt such a jump in confidence with my Spanish. Karen is an excellent conversationalist and a pleasure to speak with. She has an engaging personality and helps me improve my Spanish with gentle corrections that facilitate the conversation. One of the best things about these classes is that Karen creates a warm welcoming environment where you can make mistakes. I make them all the time, most recently I was trying to say 'straight line' but I said 'bum' and Karen calmly tried to understand what I was saying before explaining what I said. I couldn’t help but laugh! Thankfully, by making this mistake in class, I’ve avoided it in daily interactions across South america. So take classes with Karen and look forward to making mistakes because it will help you get to fluency faster.

I had a great time, our conversation was so natural and friendly. Of course, I made a lot of mistakes but I also got great feedback and vocabulary to practice as homework. If you want to feel comfortable, like when you are talking with an old friend than you should definitely talk with Karen :)
