Ricardo Filgueira

Ricardo has been such an amazing teacher! I hadn't spoken Portuguese in 10 years and after just 2 months of lessons I am beginning to speak again with some confidence. He does a really great job at walking you through the formal elements of Portuguese while teaching you how to speak like a local. Ricardo always encourages me to try to express something even if I don't yet have the language. He cultivates a really safe and supportive environment where you feel ok making mistakes as a student! It's all part of the process. I look forward to taking many more months of lessons with him. I can't recommend him as a tutor enough!

I started lessons with Ricardo two months ago as a complete beginner and it has been great. His lessons are very interactive and multi-faceted (grammar, vocab, oral comprehension, “real life” vs. formal Portuguese, pronunciation tips, PDF material/lessons and audio recordings via e-mail) and there are a lot of opportunities to practice during the lesson. He also explains really well the small nuances in pronunciation– for me, this was one of the most intimidating parts of learning Portuguese, but now I feel comfortable with reading (slowly) and when listening, I can decipher how a word might be spelled, which helps a lot with comprehension. Ricardo obviously has a lot of experience and passion for teaching, and I’m really impressed with the course and with the fact that he seems to constantly be updating and creating material. Hoje tive mais uma excelente aula com o Ricardo. Sempre me impressiona a forma detalhada e cuidadosa com que ele corrige as minhas tarefas, e as conversas são sempre muito dinâmicas. Sem dúvida, Ricardo é um professor de português excepcional.

Ricardo class is very good. He knows all the details about portugues grammar, vocabulary and expressions, and is very good at transmiting that knowledge.

Great first lesson with Ricardo. He explained everything well and gave some great tips on how to learn different elements of the language more easily.

Had another great session with Ricardo tonight. I am an advanced Portuguese student and focusing on not only my verbal communications skills, but also writing skills, which are right up Ricardo's alley so to speak, as he is degreed in Portuguese. Ricardo corrects my written text in a way that is both informative, fair and matter-of-fact, so you won't be subject to 'grade inflation' - he'll encourage you, but won't sugarcoat your errors either. Ricardo also offers 'Flutent Portuguese' where you'll not improve your knowledge of the language but also gain a great appreciation of the Brazilian culture and you can get a sample of these excellent videos on YouTube. Definitely recommend Ricardo for all levels of the language, as his enthusiasm and professional manner are second to none.
