Audio quality is one of the most important factors when teaching a phonetic language like korean. My goal of the first lesson was to get pronunciation and speaking practice and receive direct feedback. The audio quality was so poor that is sounded like a crackling microphone the whole time. I specifically said that my goal was to get speaking practice and he shouldn't try and "teach" me the language but roleplay with me. He just didn't seem to understand my request and kept trying to teach me the definitions of words and spoke exclusively in english. After saying again that my goal was to speak myself I pulled up a korean alphabet and asked him to provide example words that I can practice and he could correct my pronunciation. He said he needed prep time to give me example words (in his own language) and kept asking more and more get to know me questions in english. We ran out of time and he asked to schedule another lesson.

I appreciated the teacher’s time; however, much of the lesson was conducted in English, even after I requested to speak mostly in Korean. The class felt unstructured, with a focus on personal questions rather than guided learning. Unfortunately, I didn’t feel that I learned anything new during the session.

Throughout our first class, I could see that Jaeuk has a very kind and patient personality. He showed genuine interest by asking questions about me, and he gave thoughtful answers to my questions about him.
I really like that he taught me more natural ways to convey my thoughts in Korean. I also appreciated that we mainly spoke in Korean the whole time, which was great for my confidence as a learner.
I had sent in a short piece of writing beforehand and mentioned that I’d like to review it together during class, but unfortunately, we didn’t get to it. I hope we can do it next time.
He ended the class by explaining his courses and offering a possible plan for our continued lessons, which gave me something to look forward to.
I had a nice time learning with him!
