This course mainly focuses on an introduction to Chinese as a language family, the Mandarin spoken language, Pinyin (initials, finals and tones) as the Romanization system for Mandarin, Chinese characters (most basic 250 characters), frequently used vocabulary, as well as simple phrases.

For students who have prior experience with Chinese, we will have a brief evaluation before the first class to pick the right material for you.

Chinese(Mandarin) - Beginner Level 初级汉语 (Free Material Provided)

Suitable for students who have already taken beginner-level courses with enough understanding of the basics, or who had previous experience with Chinese, ideally with solid background in Pinyin and 250 common Chinese characters.

This course mainly focuses on expanding students' words and characters repertoire, teaching the basics of Chinese grammar, and helping students structure words and phrases into sentences. The end goal is for students to be able to write simple paragraphs or utter short speeches under an everyday setting and proceed to the advanced level of Chinese learning.

Chinese(Mandarin) - Intermediate Level 中级汉语

This course targets students who have a solid grasp of the basics of Chinese, ideally those who have mastered Pinyin, 1000 basic words and characters, and phrases common in daily conversations. Students considering taking this course need to be capable of uttering short speeches for a given everyday topic fluently, accurately and correctly. More capable students can write short essays as well.
本课程为高级中文课程，主要针对已经掌握中文发音和大量基本中文字词的学生。准备选择高级课程的学生要能够流利、准确地使用中文针对特定主题做简短发言。熟练使用汉字的学生还可以考虑书写短文。

The main content of this course focuses on more complex grammar points, syntax and compound words, as well as a more holistic understanding of written and verbal communication in Chinese. Students also get to choose which aspect of Chinese they would like to perfect, such as business Chinese or colloquial Chinese, with a greater number of exercises aimed at identifying the challenges faced by students.

I am from University of Toronto with a degree in Statistics and Psychology, with a major focus on psycholinguistics. I have been an English learning mentor at University of Toronto for more than 3 years. Besides those experiences, I have also been tutoring English and Chinese off-campus, especially test preparations for IELTS and TOEFL. Using my background in psycholinguistics and language acquisition, I have infused a number of scientific methods into my teaching, and gladly I have seen quite a few of students making considerable progress along their way of learning English and Chinese.
