Hello! I’m James, an English language teacher and aspiring writer from Scotland, with bachelor’s and master’s degrees in English, American and Gothic literature. This academic background is reflected in the "Language Through Literature" and "Proof-reading" sessions I offer on italki that have proven popular with students.
Since I first started teaching on italki in 2018, I've helped hundreds of students to improve their English and achieve their goals. My most popular lesson is "General English", which focuses on systematically improving students' core skills so they can reach the next level in their English language journey.教学经验
I'm a qualified English language teacher, with both TEFL and CELTA teaching certificates. I've previously taught B1-C1 English language learners in a traditional classroom setting, as part of my CELTA training at Edinburgh's Centre of English Studies (CES).
I've been teaching on italki since 2018, and take great pride in the testimonials that students have posted on my teacher profile. My students and former colleagues have commended me for my professionalism, friendliness, warmth and sense of humour. “General English”: We'll focus on improving your core skills to get you to the next level. I’ll provide teaching materials, homework and periodic assessments.
“Informal Tutoring”: We can discuss any topic of interest or roleplay what you need to practise (i.e. job interviews). I’ll correct your mistakes and introduce relevant grammar/vocabulary.
“Proof-reading”: Need help with your writing? I can correct your mistakes and offer you advice. I specialise in academic writing, but I’ve also helped students with their creative projects.
“Language Through Literature”: If you're interested in reading, I can offer a range of English-language short stories, poems and essays we can discuss.我的教学资料

Cambridge English Level 5 Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CELTA) (QCF) - Centre of English Studies (CES), Edinburgh - 2017A 140 hour teacher training course that included 60 hours of teaching practice (including collaborative planning, peer observation, shared evaluation and feedback) and 6 hours of individual teaching, observed and assessed by an experienced trainer.

Professional TeacherI have been teaching professionally on italki since 2018, helping students to advance their English level as well as prepare for the IELTS test. In addition, drawing on my past experience as an academic specialising in English and American literature, I have been able to offer students more advanced lessons that seek to improve their English through reading, discussing and writing about literature. I have also worked closely with students to proofread their work and improve their writing.

硕士 - The Gothic ImaginationGraduated with an M.Litt (with distinction) in "The Gothic Imagination", a year-long course on the Gothic tradition in 18th - 21st century literature, art and popular culture.

学士 - English StudiesGraduated with a 1:1 BA (Hons) in English Studies (meaning English literature). Between 2005-2007, the course required me to take additional modules in History, Philosophy and Linguistics.

Volunteer Property AssistantWhilst volunteering as a property assistant, I worked primarily as a room guide at the NTS's Gladstone’s Land property on Edinburgh’s Royal Mile. I studied the history of the property and of Edinburgh before relating this knowledge back to visitors. I worked closely alongside different teams of guides, co-ordinating their coffee breaks. I also assisted at reception and in the gift shop, selling tickets and merchandise, operating the till, taking inventory of stock and answering enquiries.
2015 - 2015
Volunteer Partnerships ResearcherAs a partnerships researcher I used my research skills to identify charities that ProjectScotland could partner with and to gather information requested by the Partnerships Managers. I developed a system for creating and managing the posters used to advertise ProjectScotland's volunteering opportunities, condensing the available information into clear, concise advertisements. I later returned to induct my successor in this role.

Another great lesson! I would have never believed learning English can be such an enjoyable experience. James is a wonderful teacher. He is kind and patient, encouraging and supportive. He has a great sense of humour and profound insights, and it is always a pleasure to discuss short stories with him.
