I am a highly qualified, native speaking IELTS specialist with a DELTA certification. With 20+ years of teaching and training experience, I have worked in 20 countries around the world, in regions like Asia, Central Asia, South America, Europe, and Africa
As a former Cambridge IELTS examiner, I have assessed over 7,000 speaking and 3,000 writing tests globally in exam centers in Venezuela, Qatar, India, Belarus, Myanmar, and Ethiopia. Plus, since moving online, I have helped around 2,000 students over 5,000 lessons on italki. My expertise is identifying and addressing the specific challenges adult learners face achieving their desired IELTS scores. I am also a certified CELPIP instructor.教学经验
In my 20 years of teaching, I have taught all types of learners: from elementary to proficient, infants to elderly, Business English, General English and everything in between. I have worked for the industry leading organizations such as English First, International House and the British Council. I have led high profile educational projects including for the National Parliament of Myanmar, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Ethiopia and the Ministry of the Interior of Qatar.

As an exam preparation teacher, my goal is to make sure you fully understand the DOs and DONTs of the IELTS exam. My materials, developed during my time at the British Council, will take you through, step-by-step, the requirements of the exam to best ensure you are receiving the best possible score for your language level.

CELPIP Instructor Level 1 - Paragon Testing - 2025A certificate course run by the owners of the CELPIP exam: Paragon Testing. The exam is one of two accepted by the Canadian government for immigration. IELTS teacherConducted thousands of 1-to-1 IELTS exam training sessions to adults in a variety of skills including speaking, writing, reading and listening.

Academic CoordinatorLed the teaching team with teacher training, curriculum & material development, managing clients & stakeholders, plus delivering high-end training workshops to UN Agencies, NGOs and various Ethiopian Ministries. Also helped the exams department as an IELTS examiner.

Educational Project CoordinatorHeaded a project funded by the UK Government in the National Parliament of Myanmar to better enable Members of Parliament to engage in blended learning programmes. Also managed delivery of English language and professional skills workshops to the parliamentary support staff. ESL TeacherParticipated in the Iraqi Institute for the Conservation of Antiquities and Heritage: a training facility partnered by IRD, UNESCO and local KRG government. The institute’s focus was to improve the quality and expertise of all aspects of care for regional historical artefacts. Duties were related to preparing participants for overseas studies including exam preparation, English training, cultural awareness and application processes.

ESL TeacherWorked on a US Embassy program (ACCESS) aimed at disadvantaged youths in a variety of educationally focused goals, including ESL training, community integration and social awareness. Led youths as a mentor for international exchange programs (YES), scholarships (Fulbright, Nexen) and preparation for international standard tests (TOEFL).

Academic ConsultantHeaded an assessment initiative with a local educational NGO working in rural schools in Oaxaca state. Aims evaluated then suggested and implemented modern teaching methodologies and materials. Responsibilities included teacher training, curriculum development and teaching.

ESL TeacherResponsible for working with Government ministries, agencies and multinational corporations. Assisted in creating international relation departments of smaller ministries (like the Ministry of Emergency Situations, Ministry of Taxes and Ministry of Economic Development) primarily through management training, ESL training and cultural awareness classes. Also worked with oil related organizations like AzNeft and BP (and some contractors) leading pre-intermediate to advanced classes.

Director of StudiesPerformed duties of International Department Head. Primary responsibilities included teacher training and supervision, curriculum development as well as teaching IELTS classes. Local teachers in the department were trained to use a communicative approach in the ESL classes. The approach proved highly successful and student enrolment in the new department increased exponentially. As a new department, all objectives and goals had to be identified, methodology and materials chosen and testing made.

ESL TeacherInitial duties were that of ESL teacher for students ranging from 4 to 60 years old and beginners to advanced. Later responsibilities included development and facilitation of in-company language training program for clients such as Hilton Hotels and SS Pharmaceuticals. At Hilton, an in-house curriculum was developed by creating job specific courses with key phrases and relevant vocabulary important to individual positions within the company.

Educational Programming ConsultantWhile working at an ESL school, teaching beginner to advanced level adults, was specially chosen to collaborate in the development of an instructional English language video (English for You) for educational, as well as, commercial purposes. JOE’s lessons have been absolutely amazing!
As a former IELTS examiner, he has an outstanding understanding of the test itself, but more than that, his ability to teach English is truly exceptional.
To be honest, finding a good writing tutor hasn’t been easy for me. I often felt that many lessons weren’t much different from just using AI feedback. But his class was completely different from anything I’ve experienced before.
He’s not only incredibly skilled, but also creates such a warm and encouraging atmosphere that makes it easy to stay focused and comfortable throughout the lesson. He has a great sense of humor, too, which really helps keep the class positive and enjoyable.
Honestly, I want to recommend him to everyone who’s struggling like I was, but at the same time, I secretly want to wait until I’ve finished my own exam… just in case he gets too popular and I can’t book a lesson anymore :)

I got a 7.5 after 6 classes with Joe! He focused on how to pass the exam and maximize the score instead of English language itself. As a result, you can see a big leap in just several days! I could not achieve what I got without his instructions, such as discourse markers, complex sentences and so many other magics.
He’s perfect for IELTS students who want to understand the criteria and see the test from an examiner’s prospective! Highly recommend for people with the language abilities but dont know the exam skills.

This is my sixth writing class with Joe. Joe is a teacher, who is humorous and patient. He also knows well about how to guide the students to generate their own ideas and language.
In the first class, he analyzed my weakness and all four lessons were targeted at the writing skills I need. After the lessons, I feel more confident about writing an IELTS essay. Joe helped me build up the structure of writing, which is really useful. After the last lesson, he also provided the suggestion to help me improve after class.
