I am a native speaker of English from the UK and I'm motivated to help English language learners achieve their goals. I have in-depth knowledge of English linguistics and phonetics, which I've gained over more than 20 years of academic study, professional work, and experimental research on speech and language. Aside from my native British English, I'm familiar with other varieties of English, particularly American and Canadian, having lived in North America for several years. I hold an ESL certificate and a PhD in Language & Cognition. I've created and analyzed TOEFL and TOEIC tests at ETS and conducted IELTS-format tests. I'm also familiar with Cambridge, Duolingo, and Pearson tests.

I'm an easy-going, approachable, attentive, insightful, clear, and sensitive teacher. I have over 18 years' experience teaching, tutoring and mentoring students of English and Linguistics. I've taught students of all ages and all levels of proficiency, from beginners to near bilinguals: A1 to C2 and beyond. I have particularly extensive expertise in pronunciation and academic writing, which have been central to my academic career for over 20 years. If you have a special interest in developing and practicing these skills, I'll be especially useful to you.

I like to get to know my students and their skills, so we'll likely spend the beginning of our first session chatting about ourselves. I'll take this as an opportunity to identify your linguistic strengths and weaknesses. I tailor my sessions and materials according to your goals, so please share your learning preferences with me. I generally aim for a mixture of thematic presentation, focused and free practice, and spontaneous conversation in a session, as long as time permits. I keep up to date on developments in language teaching and learning research, so that I can bring to my students those teaching methodologies and techniques that have been proven to be best and most effective.

Stephen was very well prepared. He carefully selected the exercises and put up an elaborate programme which was suitable for me to improve my weaknesses in a specific and desired way. During the lessson, it was amazing to see how detailed he explained the application of phonetics to me. He also responded to all my questions comprehensively and patiently.

Stephen is a very pleasant and patient teacher. In my first lesson, he created a calm, enjoyable and encouraging learning atmosphere.
