Hello! My name is John, and I live just outside Charleston, South Carolina in the United States. I’m a native English speaker with a clear American accent, and I love helping students feel confident using English in real conversations. I earned my Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry and have taught at the university level. My experience, though, goes beyond the classroom. I’ve worked in research labs, taught college students, and now enjoy teaching English to learners from all around the world.

My experience teaching college classes has made me a patient teacher who knows the importance of being open, accessible, and honest. I have taught courses that typically have a reputation for being difficult, and so I have experience working with students one-on-one to help them succeed. I am not a rigid teacher but instead someone who is willing to be flexible and adaptable.

My aim is to help people improve their ability to speak conversationally and more naturally in English. I am interested in learning what a student's personal goals are in their language study and how they hope to use English in the future. I believe any lessons should be tailored towards those goals as much as possible rather than setup in a generalized, rigid structure that may be more appropriate for earlier stages of language learning. Whether you want to have conversation practice with a native speaker, improve your ability to read and comprehend English writing, or even improve your ability to write in English, I would like to help.

John is an amazing conversationalist becuase he is kind, engaging, active, patient and he encourages me to speak more in English! He also corrects my mistakes in grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation and helps me with new words and synonyms. I've talked with him on a lot of topics today and he asked me questions which I was really glad to answer! He also made me ask him questions about life or something interesting.
