My approach is to always be positive and encouraging so that the student looks forward to each session and feels the joy of progression in the language. Native Danish professor I have been teaching English in a private institute here in Uruguay for 1 year, I am TEFL certified, and have had various students on Danish classes as well. I teach by seeking out the specific goals and interests of my students, so they get to talk about all the things that matter the most to them. A common dogma between language teachers is to harshly demand that only the target language be spoken, and while practice is key, my personal experience show that clarification questions in a more comfortable tongue can go a long way in terms of actual understanding of the subject.
