Let's start with the simple notions:&nbsp; <h3>The difference between ne and nè.</h3>Ne is a copulative conjunction with the meaning of "and not." It is usually used for the coordination of two or more negative propositions. Thus it is the opposite of "and".An example of two sentences with the same meaning but one positive and the second negative will follow: 1. Marco went out to lunch and dinner this weekend.&nbsp;(Marco è andato a pranzo e a cena fuori questo fine settimana) 2. Marco went neither to lunch nor dinner out this weekend. (Marco non è andato a pranzo nè a cena fuori questo fine settimana.) “nè” is also often repeated in the same sentence, at the beginning and end of the negation, to reinforce the concept, for example:&nbsp;3. Marco went neither to lunch nor dinner out this weekend. (To exclude both options).&nbsp; Clear?&nbsp;Let us now turn to the sore tooth:&nbsp; <h3>The "ne" is a particle.</h3>You need to know that ne is always used after specifying the thing or person, in short, the object of speech. Che ne dici?→ Che dici (di chi?) del nuovo amico di Alessio/ di lui– Sì, l’ho conosciuto e ne sono rimasta impressionata. → Sono impressionata (da chi?) dal nuovo amico di Alessio/ da lui) Are you in the mood for pizza? - Yes, I am in the mood for it. → I am in the mood (for what?) for pizza/for her.(Hai voglia di pizza? – Sì, ne ho voglia. → Ho voglia (di che cosa?) di pizza / di lei) - I went to the office at 8 a.m. and didn't come out until 8 p.m.! → I got out (of what?) the office.(– Sono andata in ufficio alle 8 e ne sono uscita solo alle 20! → Sono uscita (da che cosa?) dall’ufficio) As you can see, if the sentence is explicit (i.e., if we use the complement → of/by + thing or person), the complement should be put after the verb. If, on the other hand, we use NE, it always goes before the verb! Then there is a second case,&nbsp; <h3>NE is used to indicate part of a quantity</h3>For example:- How many books have you read? - I have read only two. → I read only two (of what?) books.(– Quanti libri hai letto ? – Ne ho letti solo due. → Ho letto solo due (di che cosa?) di libri.) - I bought seven sandwiches but ate only three. → I ate only three (of what?) of sandwiches.(Ho comprato sette panini ma ne ho mangiati solo tre. → Ho mangiato solo tre (di che cosa?) di panini.) WARNING!In this case, namely, when NE indicates part of a quantity, we must tune the past participle to the gender and number of the noun it replaces.&nbsp;- How many coffees have you had? I had only two. → -i (masculine plural, like "coffee")Quanti caffè hai bevuto? Ne ho bevuti solo due. → -i (maschile plurale, come “caffè”) <h3>But what if the quantity is 0?</h3>&nbsp;Again we use NE, but the rule of tuning it, applies only to gender and not to I number (because precisely it is zero). <h3>Ne as a replacement</h3>Yes, just like this! Also, a whole sentence or several sentences concerning the same concept (always said, however, previously) can be replaced by NE.Ex: We're going to the beach tomorrow, I'd rather leave early. What do you think? -&gt; What do you think (of what?) about the fact that we could go to the beach and leave early(Domani andiamo al mare, preferirei partire presto. (I feel like I... / I’d fancy...)&nbsp;This particular way of expressing appreciation is quite informal.&nbsp;You will use it in a conversation with your friends or simply in a situation where you feel&nbsp;particularly comfortable.&nbsp;It corresponds to the more polite vorrei, which is the conditional form of the verb volere.&nbsp;e.g.&nbsp;A: Paolo, ti va/andrebbe una birra? The reason is historical, because England as we know it today, was deeply influenced by the Romans speaking Latin, and Vikings- the Normans speaking a dialect of French and the Saxons speaking an ancestor language close to Old High German. Thus, it incorporated many of those languages in its formation. This is a very simplified account of a long history of many invading nations or tribes conquering the land and throwing out languages with the result being, English today derives most of its words from other European languages. Later on, many English writers and scholars used Latin in their work as Latin was the language of philosophers and the educated. Many French words are still in circulation because French was the language of diplomacy around the 17th and 18th Centuries until 1919. Here we will take a look at some of the most commonly found foreign words used in English formally and colloquially that you can add to your speaking and writing.&nbsp; 1. Entrepreneur (pronounced on·truh·pruh·nuh) Entrepreneur means a person with their own business/businesses or who takes financial risks for profits.&nbsp; When you say the word “entrepreneur” Elon Musk springs to mind. He is one of the most famous entrepreneurs of our time with multiple businesses and business interests.&nbsp; Today most companies want their employees to have an “entrepreneurial mindset” meaning, to think of ways of generating more revenue without relying on ideas from someone else.&nbsp; 2. Faux Pas (pronounced foh pah)The French translated it as “false step” which means a social blunder or mistake in a social situation.&nbsp; When speaking you can say “A certain celebrity made a faux pas by wearing black to a floral-themed event” or “I made a faux pas by ordering pineapple on my Pizza in Italy.” It is something that usually means an incorrect judgment was made in a social situation determined by social customs or traditions. 3. Genre (pronounced zhon·ruh) Based on the Latin word “Genos”, the French took this word in the 1700s to describe a certain style of art, literature, or film. Today we speak about genres of film, music, literature, and art. For example in film main genres include thriller, comedy, drama, and horror, and in music rock, pop, blues, and jazz. What is your favorite genre in film and music? 4. Renaissance (pronounced ruh·nay·sons) It is a French word translated as “rebirth”. It is used to describe a period in European civilization that saw a revival in Classical art and literature and a fervent change in politics and economics following the Middle Ages. The Renaissance period started in Florence, Italy in the 14th Century. Some of the most recognized artists, writers, intellectuals, and creators include Leonardo Di Vinci, Michelangelo, Galileo, and William Shakespeare.&nbsp; 5. Rendezvous (pronounced ron·day·voo) Also from the French meaning “meeting” or “date”. Interestingly, in the 1590s military used “rendezvous” as an expression of a “place for assembling troops”. Even today military tacticians may use the term rendezvous point, as you may have heard in some war films.&nbsp; Next time you could ask your English friends, “What time shall we rendezvous?” It is seen as a cute and charming expression.&nbsp; 6. Gesundheit (pronounced guh·zuund·hyt)“Gesundheit” has been borrowed from German and literally means “good health”. It is usually said after someone sneezes. The English equivalent means bless you and can be used as it means the same.&nbsp; 7. Caveat (ka·vee·at) A caveat is a word taken directly from Latin and means a limitation or warning in an agreement. It is usually used in legal jargon however it has been brought into colloquial language as well.&nbsp; For example, you could say; “ The owner of our beach house gave an important caveat, we should keep the doors locked at all times.” Or “The offer is fantastic except for one caveat; having to work on weekends.”.&nbsp; 8. Ergo (pronounced uh·gow)Ergo means, therefore. It comes directly from the Latin conjunction meaning consequently, accordingly, and therefore. It is used mainly in writing and rhetoric and is considered a fancy way to say “therefore” usually used in academic or formal writing.&nbsp; An example of ergo would be “You saw the robbery, ergo you will be called as a witness”. Or “The Summer is coming and many people are going on holiday, ergo the city will be empty.”&nbsp;&nbsp; 9. Status quo (pronounced stay·tuhs·kwoh)The Latin means the “state in which” and was used to describe “the existing state” and is used to mean “the current state or situation”.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Status quo is often found in news reports and would be used in the following way, “The management is reluctant to hire more women so that it does not affect the status quo”. “She will not move - she wants to maintain the status quo”. Status Quo is also a British rock band popular in the late 1970s and 80s.&nbsp;10. Vice versa (pronounced vise vuh·suh) Vice versa comes from the Latin “vicis” meaning a change or alteration but also a place or a position. Versa comes from versus which means to turn. When combined the phrase means when the position turns or in English it is said to mean “the other way around” or “in reverse”.&nbsp; It is an adverbial phrase used to express that something is true even in the opposite order, for example, “My boss dislikes me and vice versa”. Hello students all over the world.&nbsp;Today, for this new article I have chosen the taboo topic for every student: the "THEterminative" articles as I call them, or more simply the determinative articles.&nbsp; If in English "the" is one and only, we Italians like to complicate our lives a bit in all things and here are some examples:&nbsp;Most words often have more than one meaning so you have to figure it out from the context, the problem is that a sentence can mean several things so you have to figure it out from the intonation, but if we are writing a message, how do we do that? Speaking of messages, we don't have abbreviations like ASAP, 2DAY, 4U, etc., but we have to necessarily write and say everything in full, so to say in Italian what would be said in English with 4 simple letters (ASAP) we will say "il prima possibile" or even "nel minor tempo possibile”. But isn't this the beauty of the Italian language? The variety, the antiquity, the musicality--in short, the Italianness! Although, this matter of saying everything in Italian is getting a bit out of hand. In fact, it was just a few days ago the news that in Italy they are trying to diminish the words of other languages now adopted in our daily life, which to me seems absurd in 2023 (which by the way we don't call “20-23” but "duemilaventitrè" so as not to lose the habit), in short I was saying that it seems counterproductive to me this business of banning other languages at a time when the world is going in the direction of globalization.&nbsp;But that's another story, back to us.&nbsp; As you may have guessed from this foreword, short or not, you will be the one to say, because usually when they say it is a "small preface," then small it never is, we can talk about "THEterminative" articles.&nbsp; I am here to tell you that they are much simpler than they seem even though I agree that they can be scary in that they are more than a few.&nbsp;Let's start by calling them by name.&nbsp;Here I introduce them to you.&nbsp;There are 6 siblings and they are: IL, LO, LA, I, GLI, LE and L'. Which they teach us in school as a ditty so that we remember them all.We distinguish them into two categories to make it simple: Masculine and Feminine (which for simplicity in this article we will denote by M and F, where M stands for masculine and F for feminine) and Singular and Plural (S/P).&nbsp; So far so good, right? But how to use them now that we know them?&nbsp;Here is the rule I have used with all my students and have been successful 100% of the time (students listening, can you confirm?) Let's start with LO= we use it with M S words (remember? Masculine singular) that begin with some duo of letters that I call special, and they are: st (lo stadio), sp (lo sport), ps (lo psicologo), pn (lo pneomatico), gn (lo gnomo) and z (lo zaino); Let's move on to IL= this is easy: if an M S word does not start with a vowel or a special duo, then let's use him! (il gelato, il maestro, il tavolo). I= is simply the plural of IL, so we use it for words that begin with vowels but are plural, so M but this time P. (i gelati, i maestri, i tavoli) GLI= is the plural of LO is L' so we use it the same way but of course with words M but P (so with words beginning with st, sp, ps, pn,gn and z)(Gli sport, gli amici, gli zii, gli esercizi).&nbsp;For the masculine we have finished, now we move on to the easiest part, the feminine. Despite being told that we are more complicated than men, this is not the case for articles!&nbsp; We use LA for all F S words that do not begin with vowels (so even with specials, it makes no difference). Italian is a romance language and as such it is full of shades and meanings.&nbsp; You can sometimes find yourself struggling with the right word to use because there are many&nbsp;synonyms to choose from.&nbsp;Look for example at the verbs sapere and conoscere.&nbsp; Do these 2 verbs share the same meaning?&nbsp;Can we use them interchangeably in all situations?&nbsp;How can we understand when to use one instead of the other?&nbsp; This is a bunch of the questions I am going to answer in this brief article, and I hope you will find&nbsp;them useful to help you improve your knowledge of the Italian language.&nbsp;Let's see more in detail what each verb can express and then let’s practice a bit with some useful&nbsp;examples.&nbsp; SAPERE:&nbsp;This verb is a so-called modal verb, therefore it basically expresses that someone has knowledge of&nbsp;something, and by that, I specifically refer to the ability of someone to do something.&nbsp;I would say that in English this concept is expressed through the use of can:e.g. I can swim (So nuotare)&nbsp; Meaning they have knowledge of how to swim, they know how to do it.&nbsp;As you can see from the example, this verb in this case is followed by another verb: nuotare (to&nbsp;swim).&nbsp;But you can also find it followed by a noun or a noun phrase:&nbsp;e.g. Daniele sa il francese. This article will show you some points! <h3>1.Festivals and “Romarias”</h3>Portugal is a country that loves parties, but also its traditions and as such we have lots of festivals and "romatias” and each land or region has its own! Most of them are connected to the Christian religion, like the Festa de Nossa Senhora dos Remédios (Lamego), the Festa do Senhor Santo Cristo dos Milagres (Azores), or even the popular saints.&nbsp;&nbsp;But there are also festivals that have distanced themselves from religion and have acquired more varied objectives, such as the Flower Festival (Madeira) a beautiful and unique festival in the country, or the Festas a Feira de São Mateus (Viseu). You should try it! <h3>&nbsp;2. Traditional dances!&nbsp;</h3>Almost all nations if not many have typical dances or love to dance. Portugal is no exception. Most of our dances have the accordion (very present in Portuguese culture) as a common instrument (with the Pauliteiros de Miranda being an exception, it's very interesting because they use the instrument while they dance!)&nbsp;&nbsp;Another thing that characterizes our dances are the typical clothes, just like in the Swiss Alps, in Portugal we also have typical clothes. One of the interesting things to say about typical clothes is that they change according to the region. Gastronomy&nbsp;</h3>&nbsp;Those who have already had the opportunity to travel to Portugal know well how varied our gastronomy is and as if that wasn't enough each region has its own typical dishes with ingredients from each region. We can possibly divide it between the Mediterranean zone and the Atlantic zone, besides that because of the time of the discoveries we also have some oriental influences.&nbsp;&nbsp;Do you know that the most famous product is codfish? What if I told you that it is not even found on our coasts and is caught over a thousand kilometers away from the country? It is true, but we still love it, at least the majority of the Portuguese. Portuguese gastronomy is not only cod but also other types of fish and meat, vegetables, and various grains. Mnhami, what are you going to eat? <h3>5. Conventual Sweets&nbsp;</h3>Get in shape? Go on a diet? Let's move on from gastronomy to sweets!&nbsp;&nbsp;There's no doubt that one of the most famous typical Portuguese sweets is “pastel de Belém” (or pastel de nata, its imitation). But we are a country with a great variety of sweets, we can eat a different cake a day for a lot of days! You could say that practically any village or city has its own typical sweet, surprising I know. Just think of things like pastel de Tentúgal, pastel de Vouzela, queijadas and travesseiros from Sintra, clarinhas from Esposende, pão de ló from Ovar or ovos moles from Aveiro.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Now it's time to be amazed and learn how it all began!&nbsp;&nbsp;A large part of this variety of sweets is due to the old nunneries, which had the ingredients, time, and creativity to create different recipes. They also had a large number of egg yolks (the whites were used to take care of the linen), so they needed to put this ingredient to some use, which led to the creation of several different sweets. <h3>6. Azulejos</h3>The development of Azulejos was stimulated at the end of the 15th century and the beginning of the 16th century when Portuguese art was influenced by Muslim ornamental decoration. Tiles were then ordered from the Moorish ceramics of Seville, which were used on the most diverse surfaces.&nbsp;&nbsp;In the second half of the 16th century, tiles also arrived in our country from Flemish workshops, in addition to the Spanish workshops, and through the influence of these centers, we learned the method of manufacturing and painting faience.&nbsp;&nbsp;From the East came the sense of brilliance, exuberance, and ornamental motifs, and from China came the blue of porcelain, which stripped the tiles of their repetitive character and filled them with dynamism and movement. Literatura</h3>We are known as a country of poets, whose tradition began at the same time as the nation, thanks to troubadour poetry. We rose to the top of the epic with Luís de Camões' Lusíadas, which tells the story of the Portuguese discoveries.&nbsp;&nbsp;We cannot forget to name our great poet Fernando Pessoa, a great genius who even had heteronyms. In the 20th century, the work of the most widely translated Portuguese poet was from him!&nbsp; Although I'm not a fan and people say either you love it or you hate him we have Jose Saramago! He won the Nobel Prize in 1998. <h3>8. Fado</h3>It's not known exactly what is the geographical and temporal origin of fado there are several theories since it had its origins in the Muslim songs others say it may have originated in the “lundum” through the sailors that transported slaves. Others more daring say that it has origin in the medieval troubadours having into account the similarities of the themes.In certain regions of Lisbon and Porto, it is possible to find typical Fado houses, where you can eat and drink and watch a concert.&nbsp;For those who don't know Fado derives from the Latin Fatum, which means destiny. In my opinion, it may even be appropriate for this unique style of music and the intangible heritage of onesco. <h3>9. Estilo Manuelino e Estilo Barroco Joanino</h3>With different origins, but rich histories one was born in the reign of D.Manuel I and, we have some monuments of this style with several characteristic and unique elements, such as the armillary sphere and the cross of Christ, personal symbols of the king and reflection of the power to which he aspired, some buildings we have Torre de Belém e o Mosteiro dos Jerónimos and the other one and the other one (Barroco Joanino) designation refers to the various artistic currents that coexisted during the reign of King João V, with notable architects we have some buildings as Torre dos Clérigos, Convento de Mafra, Aqueducto das Águas Livres, and much others. <h3>10. Handicrafts - Artesanato</h3>Characteristics of rural areas, where traditions remain more alive. Each region has its own particular handicrafts, in accordance with the ways of life of each place, with emphasis on arts such as jewelry, lace, tapestry, embroidery, weaving, basketry, and painted ceramics. <h3>11. Caretos</h3>They have rattled around their waist, a stick in their hand, and run, jump, dance, intimidate visitors, and chase single girls. This is a tradition in the Trás-os-Montes area, which can still be seen in several places, with the most famous Carnival being that of Podence. This celebration comes from Roman times, although some say it dates back to the Neolithic.&nbsp;&nbsp;What is certain is that the ritual is linked to fertility and spring. <h3>12. Religion</h3>We are a strongly Catholic country. Even if the number has fallen and we have non-practicing Portuguese, religion is still part of many people's daily lives, in a more or less intense way. In fairness, it is fair to say that Italian is a complex language, and no, I am not talking about the dreaded “congiuntivo”!&nbsp; The Italian language has far too many grammatical rules and even more exceptions to the rules or on the contrary there are topics or aspects that have none and should be learned as they are, one of them being precisely the pronunciation that varies from region to region if not from village to village! But I’m sure this does not discourage any of my readers, as if you have decided to learn Italian, you already know this and you also know that through a lot of practice, it is possible to succeed in getting the results you desire.&nbsp; Before we get into the heart of the topic of our article of the month, I think it is only right to make a small introduction by introducing the birth of the Italian language and give an answer to the question asked by so many students during our classes:&nbsp;"But what is meant by standard Italian? Is there really such a thing as a pure accent?" Generally, with the concept of standard, in linguistics, we refer to a language subject to normative codification, used as a reference model for correct usage and school teaching. And this is in fact how Italian came into being, as The standard variety of Italian is based on the Florentine vernacular of the 14th century, which, thanks to the literary prestige brought by Dante Alighieri, Francesco Petrarca, and Giovanni Boccaccio and due to the economic and cultural supremacy achieved at that time by Florence, acquired the character of a literary language with the suitable requirements to meet the need for a unified language appropriate for Renaissance cultural renewal.&nbsp; The Florentine vernacular was chosen as the national language following the Unification of Italy also because over the centuries it became the learned language par excellence, the one spoken by the literate and cultured.&nbsp; That said, one must now understand where dialects originated.&nbsp;The explanation is that old Latin evolved into different versions, depending on the area of Italy where it was spoken.&nbsp; Have you ever noticed that people in Italy often speak in different ways depending on the region and country they come from? Have you ever wondered if there is, in fact, a "real" Italian? The Italian dialectal landscape constitutes, according to many, the richest and most diverse linguistic heritage in Europe. Among the various Italian dialects, in fact, there are not only those belonging to the branch of Romance languages (to which, for example, Italian, Spanish, and French belong) but also some from Germanic, Greek, and Slavic languages.&nbsp; Today dialects are still spoken, to varying degrees in different regions and cities of Italy, and by different age groups: for example, in the northern areas dialects tend to be spoken almost exclusively by the elderly, who have spoken them throughout their lives, often along with standard Italian. In the central and southern regions, on the other hand, it is more common to find younger dialect speakers, who use it mainly in informal contexts. According to a 2015 ISTAT analysis, 45.9 percent of Italians speak Italian exclusively or predominantly, 32.2 percent alternate it with dialect, and only 14 percent use dialect exclusively.&nbsp; We can divide Italian dialects into 3 big groups:&nbsp;1. the northern or upper-Italian dialects;&nbsp;2. the Tuscan and Middle dialects;&nbsp;3. the southern and extreme southern dialects.&nbsp; Usually, there is a tendency to say that there are 30 or so main Italian dialects, actually, I believe that it is not so easy to quantify them since as with colors, so with dialects, there are infinite shades and to better explain my view, I will give here a personal example: I on italki, besides being a native Italian tutor, am also a Neapolitan tutor.&nbsp; Before starting the Neapolitan lessons I would like to point out to the students that I am from Campania, I live in a province near Naples and in my small village we are about 800 inhabitants. Here we speak a dialect very similar to Neapolitan, which, however, differs from Neapolitan in the pronunciation of some words or even in the cadence of the accents. Around my small town then, there are many other small towns, in which a dialect very similar to mine is spoken but which in turn differs from the others for the same reasons just listed, so much so that, each one of us inhabitants of this area is able to guess the origin of a person, from the dialect despite the fact that to an unaccustomed ear, it may seem that there is no distinction between one pronunciation and another.&nbsp; I want to leave you with a question about languages, in general: can there be a standard language, devoid of accents and pronunciation, thus a so-called pure language? Too much nature&nbsp;Get ready to get astonished by some of the most majestic landscapes you will ever see:&nbsp;from waterfalls, deserts, the biggest mountain range in the world, and the greatest forest on&nbsp;the planet; to millennial glaciers, and heavenly beaches to choose from. You will also find&nbsp;the world's largest river and the driest place on earth.&nbsp;&nbsp;What’s wrong with this continent? It is absurd to have some of the most famous natural&nbsp;spots in the world in only one place. The Amazon, Iguazú Falls, Perito Moreno Glacier,&nbsp;Atacama desert, The Andes, Copacabana Beach … What’s left for other continents?! Traveling from Alaska to Argentina on one of the most beautiful highways in the world,&nbsp;crossing 14 countries, and covering around 30.000 km sounds crazy.&nbsp;This continent is way too big!! Seriously, how are you going to be able to see all of it in just&nbsp;a couple of weeks? You will definitely need to go back.&nbsp; 2. You will find different people&nbsp;After traveling all over the world, I can confirm I have never met so many nice people as those living in South America. If ever you get lost at night and you don’t have a place to sleep, why would you accept the invitation of a stranger to spend the night at their home; receiving good food, a bed, and a welcoming, smiley face?&nbsp;A South American distinguishes himself by their desire to help and for having a warm and&nbsp;affectionate heart. Every country in the continent has cultures and traditions native to their&nbsp;people so be ready to see endless multiculturalism.&nbsp;&nbsp; 3. Not-so-famous gastronomy&nbsp;&nbsp;Ceviche, empanadas, asado, dulce de leche, arepas, chicharrón, feijoada, bandeja paisa,&nbsp;41 types of potatoes and 13 types of corn. I am not hungry.
