I thought I would share some tips to help people who are learning English for special purposes. I have extensive knowledge of the IELTS test, both academic and general, and I wanted to dispel a few myths about the exam. Firstly, let me share a little secret with you; as a teacher of English for the past five years, I have helped many students to understand and gain confidence in taking the IELTS test. Many have also passed with a band 7 or above, and I attribute this as much to their hard work as mine. Initially, when I first got familiar with the test structure, I thought it was really hard...there is my secret! The best way for a tutor to understand their students and the IELTS test is to take it themselves, see if they can answer the questions, and achieve a pass. For me, I personally think that the requirements of the reading part are very complex, not because the English is necessarily more difficult, but because you have to be certain of doing the tasks right, for example, if you need to put the answer in no more than three words, as is the case for some reading and listening sections, then that is important to note. Reading the instructions carefully is also crucial, if you want to understand what is required of you. These are skills that many people fail to recognise and consequently, it can affect your grade. This means, I have sometimes taught people with advanced English, who should have got a band 7 easily, but they failed to read something thoroughly, and got a lower grade. Ultimately, the IELTS test is as much about English grammar and lexical range as it is about understanding the format. I continue to test myself, take courses, and develop an extensive understanding of how to help people pass this exam.
