DOCTOR: What seems to be the problem?
CATHY: Well, I have a bad cough and a sore throat. I also have 
a headache.
DOCTOR: How long have you had these symptoms?
CATHY: About three days now. And I’m really tired, too.
DOCTOR: Hmm. It sounds like you’ve got the flu. Take aspirin
every four hours and get plenty of rest. Make sure you 
drink lots of fluids. Call me if you’re still sick next week.
CATHY: OK, thanks

LANGUAGE NOTES 
• What seems to be the problem? means “What is the problem?” Notice that the intonation 
falls at the end of the question. The doctor wants information, not a “yes/no” answer.
• Well is used as an introductory word. Notice how the vowel is drawn out, to sound like 
“Weeeeeell …” This can be used as a way to “buy time” while you think about what you 
want to say next.
• A bad cough … a sore throat … a headache: Notice the article “a” before each symptom.
• About is used to mean “more or less.” It’s used here to give an estimate of time.
• Take aspirin … get rest … Make sure … Call me: Notice the doctor uses the simple tense 
here to give instructions. This is the imperative form of the verb.
• Still sick means “continue to be sick.”

According to data from the World Food Program, nearly 20% of all food produced each year is wasted or lost before it reaches our tables. This adds up to about 1 billion meals going to waste every day.

Wasting food is not only costly but also harmful to the planet. Growing food requires a lot of land, water and energy, and these resources are all wasted when food is thrown away. Also, food waste in landfills produces harmful greenhouse gases.

In fact, according to the World Wide Fund for Nature, food waste accounts for up to 10% of all human-caused greenhouse gas emissions. And cutting global food waste by 50% by 2030 is a key goal of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

So it's clear that food waste is a huge problem, but what can the average person do to help?

For a start, several apps have been created to help reduce food waste, one of which is called Too Good to Go.

Restaurants, cafes and bakeries create a "surprise bag" — a collection of surplus food items that would otherwise be thrown away because they're close to expiring — and advertise it on the app.

Although users can't choose what goes into their surprise bag, the food in the bag is much cheaper than it would usually be.

Too Good to Go was founded in 2015 in Denmark, as a solution to the large amounts of food that were being wasted at buffet restaurants.

Many big stores now list their surplus food on Too Good to Go, such as Starbucks and Burger King. And the app's founders say their users have saved over 330 million meals from going to waste.

So while dealing with the issue of food waste may seem overwhelming, there are steps we can all take to make a difference.

関西の人は関東の人より、会話の中でオノマトペをよく使うと言われています。関西人の私がふだんどんなオノマトペを使っているかを話します。
It is said that people in Kansai use onomatope in their conversation more often than people in Kanto. I tell you what onomatopoeic words I usually use as a Kansai person.

友人とドライブをしていたときのことです。
途中で、とても見晴らしのいいところに来ました。そこで、私は「うわ～、すうっと向こうまで、めちゃくちゃよう見えるわ～」と友だちに言いました。
すると、友だちは笑いながら、「関西人はほんまに、オノマトペが多いなあ」と言いました。「この道を　まっすぐシュっと行ったらいい」とか「そこの角をきゅっと曲がって」とか言うやんと言うのです。
たしかに・・・。私もよくオノマトペを使っています。さっきの「すうっと向こうまで、めちゃくちゃよう見えるわ～」は、「何も遮るものがない、じゃまするものがないので、遠くまでよく見えますね。」という意味です。
はやくしてほしいときは、「さっさとして」　走るのが遅い車がいたら「前の車、のろのろ遅いなあ」、よくしゃべる人がいれば「ぺちゃくちゃ、ようしゃべるなあ」、友だちが大きな声で笑っていれば「なにゲラゲラ笑ってるの～？」などなど。あげればきりがありません。
私が教えている生徒さんたちも、オノマトペが出てくると、たいてい「それはどういう意味ですか」と聞きます。
外国の方にはわかりずらいオノマトペですが、私たちにとっては、なくてはならないコミュニケーションツールです。　オノマトペを使って話すと、どんな様子かよくわかるし、会話のリズムやテンポがよくなっているように思います。
たとえば、
「車、きれいになりましたね。」より、「車、ピカピカですね。」と言われたほうが、車が光るくらいきれいな感じがします。
「この布団、やわらかくて気持ちいいね」より、「この布団、ふかふかで気持ちいいね！」のほうが布団のやわらかさがよく感じられます。
こんなふうに使われているオノマトペですが、関東より関西に住んでいる人がよく使うそうです。関東とは茨城県、栃木県、群馬県、埼玉県、千葉県、東京都、神奈川県の1都6、関西は県大阪府・京都府・兵庫県・滋賀県・奈良県・和歌山県の2府4県のことです。ちょっと聞いたところでは、江戸時代から関西は関東の武士文化つまり侍の文化に対して、商人文化、商売をする人たちの文化が栄えていたためとか。オノマトペが会話を豊かにし、商売がうまくいくのに役立ったそうです。
だから、今でも関西に住む人たちは、オノマトペをたくさん使って話しをするんですね。
