お母さん狐は、心配しながら、坊やの狐の
帰ってくるのを、今か今かと ふるえながら
待っていましたので、坊やが来ると、
暖かい胸に抱きしめて 泣きたいほど
よろこびました。
二匹の狐は森の方へ帰っていきました。
月が出たので、狐の毛なみが銀色に光り、
その足あとには、コバルトの影がたまりました。

「母ちゃん、人間ってちっとも恐かないや」
「どうして？」
「坊、間違えて ほんとうのお手々出しちゃったの。
でも帽子屋さん、つかまえやしなかったもの。
ちゃんと こんないい暖い手袋くれたもの」

と言って手袋の はまった両手を
パンパンやって見せました。
お母さん狐は、「まあ！」とあきれましたが、

「ほんとうに人間はいいものかしら。
ほんとうに人間はいいものかしら」

と つぶやきました。
