Class 32. Real conversations at real speed — two friends on the phone, and everything you have learned working at once. This is the payoff class. You hear actual Malayalam moving at conversational speed, then I take it apart so you can see there is nothing in it you do not already own. Lakshmi phones Sashmira in the middle of the day. Sashmira has been looking after her mother, who is unwell. The conversation runs straight through first — do not try to catch every word, just let it move — and then we slow it down line by line. WHAT IS HIDING IN THE FIRST LINE നീ ഇപ്പോ എന്താ ചെയ്യുന്നത്? (nee ippo enthaa cheyyunnath?) — what are you doing right now? There, in line one, is the contract from the sounding-native class: എന്താ, the clipped question word, DEMANDS ചെയ്യുന്നത്, the nominalised verb. Not എന്താ ചെയ്യുന്നു. Get that one thing right and you already sound like a friend rather than a textbook. TWO SYLLABLES YOU WILL USE FIFTY TIMES A DAY നീയോ? (neeyo?) — "and you?" Simply നീ plus the question -ഒ. THE SENTENCE WITH NO CLEAN ENGLISH വലിയ മടി ആണ് (valiya madi aanu). മടി is laziness, reluctance, the feeling of really not wanting to get up. "It's a big can't-be-bothered." English has no single word for it. MORE MACHINERY, WORKING QUIETLY • ഞാനും — the additive -ഉം, "me too" • എനിക്ക് കുക്കിംഗ് ചെയ്യണം — dative subject, because the obligation lands ON her • ചെയ്യണമായിരുന്നു — necessity pushed into the past; in fast speech this becomes cheyyanaarnnu (see Class 20) • ചെയ്തോ? — the yes-no -ഒ on the verb, not a rising tone • ഞാൻ തന്നെ — തന്നെ adds "myself, none other". Malayalis use it constantly. • അമ്മയ്ക്ക് സുഖം ഇല്ല — dative again, because wellness happens TO a person • Reason first, then result: …അതുകൊണ്ട്… And notice "lunch" and "cooking" sitting inside Malayalam grammar with no fuss at all. That is the Manglish machine — an English noun slotting straight in. Taught by Dr. Reshmi R Nair.
