こんにちは、Japanese with Yoshikoへようこそ！今日は「国際的なサウジアラビア」について話そうと思います。今日のフレーズは「耳にする」です。意味を知らない人はどういう意味か想像しながら聞いてみてくださいね。

サウジアラビアは日本に比べるととても国際的で、外国人労働者がたくさんいます。街に出れば多くの外国人を見かけます。
まず、身近な存在なのは、メイドです。メイドはフィリピン人が圧倒的に多いですが、インドネシア人やアフリカ人もいます。ドライバーを雇う家庭も多いです。ドライバーは、インドやバングラデシュなどの南アジアの男性たちです。レストランのウェイターは英語が堪能なフィリピン人がしていることが多いです。街では、南アジア系の男性たちが清掃をしたり、公園のメンテナンスを行っています。医療関係はサウジ人の医者もいますが、エジプト人の医者やフィリピン人の看護師も働いています。学校では、エジプト人の先生が教えています。もちろん、欧米系の会社員の人たちもたくさん住んでいます。中国人や韓国人などは少数で、日本人はかなり稀です。私が住んでいる州には日本人が数百人いるそうですが、まだ日本人らしき人に会ったことはありません。なんと2019年にはサウジアラビアの外国人労働者は約1,300万人いたそうです。一昨年の日本にいる在留外国人の数が282万人だったので、大きな差があります。
そんなこともあって、必然的にあちらこちらで英語が飛び交っています。子供たちは英語が話せるメイドやドライバーと話すので、幼いころから英語を自然に学びます。メイドやドライバーに指示を出す親たちもある程度英語を使う必要があります。また、英語で教える大学も多く、留学しなくても英語が堪能なサウジ人が多いです。
夫の家にもフィリピン人のメイドがいて、彼女たちの母国語も耳にします。バングラディッシュ人のドライバーもいます。4歳の息子は幼いころから多文化の中で育つので、私の子供時代とは360度違う環境にいます。5年後、10年後どう成長するのかとても楽しみです。

どうでしたか？今日のフレーズは「耳にする」でしたね。意味は、「意図せずに自然に聞こえる」です。例文です。「同僚のA君がドバイに駐在になるという話を耳にした。」「日本人は働き者だと言われるのをよく耳にする。」それでは、またバイバーイ。
