Speculation and Deduction: might, must have, can't be | IELTS #035
說明
Level B2 (approx. band 5.5-6.5) · Academic and General Training
When you are not completely sure, English gives you a scale of certainty. Many learners use "maybe" for everything, or they build the forms wrongly: "He must be stayed at home", "That mustn't be true". Speaking Part 3 asks you to predict and explain causes, and Task 2 asks about consequences.
In this episode:
• Present deduction: must, might, can't
• Past deduction: must have, might have, can't have
• Likely, unlikely and other ways to predict
• Speculation in part 3 and task 2
• Listening lab
• Language bridge
• Practice
• Self-check questions with answers
Key points:
• must for a strong yes, might, may or could for possible, and can't for a strong no.
• use modal plus have plus past participle for guesses about the past; write have, never of.
• likely to, probably and may let you predict with the right level of certainty.
• in Part 3 and Task 2, match the modal to your real level of certainty.
