Learning Malayalam If You Already Speak Tamil | Learn Malayalam #183
說明
If you speak Tamil you have the largest head start of any Malayalam learner on earth — and the most dangerous one. This lesson tells you exactly what transfers, what almost transfers and will trap you, and what you must build from scratch. If you do not speak Tamil, listen anyway: the comparison teaches you a great deal about Malayalam.
I am Dr. Reshmi R. Nair, an applied linguist from Kerala. I have taught hundreds of learners to speak Malayalam as it is actually spoken.
THE GOOD NEWS, AND IT IS VERY GOOD
The grammar is essentially the same. Both are Dravidian, both descend from a common Tamil–Malayalam ancestor, and they separated somewhere between the ninth and the fourteenth centuries — roughly the distance between Spanish and Portuguese.
So everything structural transfers:
• subject–object–verb order
• postpositions rather than prepositions
• agglutination, stacking suffixes onto stems
• the case system, with the same cases doing the same jobs
• the rational/irrational noun distinction
• the inclusive and exclusive "we"
• the dative-experiencer construction for feelings and needs
WHERE IT WILL TRAP YOU
1. THE SANSKRIT LAYER. Malayalam absorbed Sanskrit far more deeply than Tamil did. The everyday core will feel familiar to you; the educated register will feel foreign. If your Tamil is strong in the classical register, Malayalam's formal register will surprise you — while a speaker of Hindi, Bengali, Kannada or Telugu gets that layer for free.
2. THE SOUND SYSTEM. Malayalam carries the full Sanskrit consonant series that the Tamil script does not distinguish. ക · ഖ · ഗ · ഘ are four letters and four different sounds; Tamil writes one and lets position decide. The aspirates — ഖ ഘ ഛ ഝ ഠ ഢ ഥ ധ ഫ ഭ — will need deliberate work, because they live in exactly the vocabulary layer you do not already have.
Do you speak Tamil? Tell me the first Malayalam word that fooled you.
