How to report what somebody said in Malayalam — and how the language marks where your information came from, which English handles only clumsily.

THE CORE FACT, AND IT IS A BIG ONE
English converts speech when it reports it. "He said: I will come" becomes "he said that he would come" — the pronoun shifts from I to he, the tense from will to would. Two separate operations on every sentence you report.

Malayalam does not do this. Malayalam quotes directly, and closes the quotation with എന്ന്.

അവൻ ഞാൻ വരും എന്ന് പറഞ്ഞു
avan njan varum ennu paranju
word for word: he · I will come · that · said

The ഞാൻ stays as "I", because you are repeating his words, not rebuilding them from your own viewpoint. Once you stop converting, reported speech becomes easier in Malayalam than in English — and learners keep converting for years.

AND THE PART ENGLISH LACKS
Malayalam has dedicated ways of marking hearsay — of saying "this is not mine, I am passing it on". English has to reach for "apparently", "supposedly", "I heard", and none of them is grammatical machinery. In Malayalam it is built in, and using it correctly is one of the clearest signals that you have stopped translating.

Then it attaches the same ending to all three.

WHY THIS MATTERS FOR HOW FAST YOU LEARN
English learners memorise twelve unrelated items, because English lost the shape of its own system centuries ago. In Malayalam, if you know the ending you know all three words — and if you meet a new word beginning with അ in this family, you already know roughly what it means and what its two siblings are.

AND A STARTLING PARALLEL
Japanese has the ko-so-a-do system: kore, sore, are, dore — koko, soko, asoko, doko. The same architecture, arrived at independently, in an unrelated family on the other side of Asia.

In English you own your feelings: I am happy. Malayalam puts you in the dative, the case of the receiver, and lets the emotion be the thing that exists or arrives.

Grammarians call this a dative-subject or experiencer construction. Learn the frame once and every emotion slots into it.

How Malayalam says that one person made another person do something — and why half the verbs you already know were secretly built this way all along.

Malayalam adds a causer with a suffix, usually -ഇക്ക് (-ikk) or -പ്പിക്ക് (-ppikk) on the verb stem. Once you see it, dozens of separate words you memorised collapse into one machine.
