You fly to Kerala tomorrow, you haven't studied, and you have one hour. This class is that hour. About thirty items, picked by one rule: put first whatever breaks the conversation if you can't say it. That means repair, courtesy and numbers before nouns, because nouns you can point at. You get the four sentences that fix everything, two frames for asking for anything, the auto-rickshaw words, one to ten, and the cultural rule for leaving someone's house. Words and phrases in this class: എനിക്ക് മനസ്സിലായില്ല (enikku manassilaayilla) – I didn't understand ഒന്ന് പതുക്കെ പറയാമോ? (onnu pathukke parayaamo?) – could you say it slowly? എനിക്ക് മലയാളം അറിയില്ല (enikku malayaalam ariyilla) – I don't know Malayalam ഇംഗ്ലീഷ് അറിയാമോ? (english ariyaamo?) – do you know English? ശരി (shari) – okay, right മതി (mathi) – enough ചായ ഉണ്ടോ? (chaaya undo?) – do you have tea? എത്രയാണ്? (ethrayaanu?) – how much is it? ആശുപത്രി എവിടെയാണ്? (aashupathri evideyaanu?) – where is the hospital? ഇവിടെ നിർത്തൂ (ivide nirthoo) – stop here വലത്ത് (valathu) – right ഇടത്ത് (idathu) – left ഞാൻ പോയിട്ട് വരാം (njaan poyittu varaam) – I'll go and come back (goodbye) In this class: • Why most phrasebooks fail, and the rule this one follows instead • The four repair sentences, and the courtesy words that change the response • Two frames for asking for anything, plus price and place • Auto directions, one to ten, greetings, and how to say goodbye Quizzes below.
