Why do we use the Past Continuous tense?

高考 gāo kǎo：the national College Entrance Examination
无数 wú shù：countless; numberless; innumerable
紧张 jìn zhǎng：nervous；tense
充满 chōng mǎn：be filled with be full of
期待 qī dài：anticipate;await;expect
话题 huà tí：subject of a talk; topic of a conversation
中国大陆 zhōng guó dà lù：
选择 xuǎn zé：the Chinese mainland
资格考试 zī gé kǎo shì：qualifying exam；qualification
大多数 dà duō shù：most; the majority of
转折点 zhuǎn zhé diǎn：turning point；milestone

在即 zài jí：about to; soon; be near at hand
如愿以偿 rú yuàn yǐ cháng：achieve what one wishes; have got one's wish;
旗开得胜 qí kāi dé shèng：succeed at the first try;as soon as one went into action he won a victory
金榜提名 jīn bǎng tí míng: gold placard nomination；have passed the examination
梦想成真 mèng xiǎng chéng zhēn：a dream come true

(1) -고 싶다:  To express one's wish or hope (want)
                       ✏Verb stem + 고 싶다 (싶어요, 싶었어요)
(2) -려고 하다 : To express a plan or intention (will)
                           ✏Verb stem  + (으)려고 하다 (해요, 했어요)
(3) -기로 하다: To indicate that one decides to do an action 
                          ✏Verb stem  + 기로 하다 (해요, 했어요),
