دَعَا المَلِكُ النَّاسَ، وَقَالَ: «لَا يَدُقُّ هَذَا النَّاقُوسَ إَلَّا الَّذِي يَتَعَرَّضُ لِلظُّلْمِ. بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ، يَجْتَمِعُ القُضَاةُ وَيَبْحَثُونَ فِي مُشْكِلَتِهِ وَيُعْطُونَهُ حَقَّهُ.» لِهَذَا السَّبَبِ، اِنْتَشَرَ العَدْلُ بَيْنَ النَّاسِ.
وَفِي قَرْيَةٍ بَعِيدَةٍ، عَاشَ شَيْخٌ بَخِيلٌ. عِنْدَمَا كَانَ الشَّيْخُ شَابًّا، كَانَ كَرِيمًا وَفَارِسًا مِغْوَارًا. كَانَ عِنْدَ الشَّيْخِ حِصَانٌ يُحِبُّهُ كَثِيرًا. مَعَ مُرُورِ الوَقْتِ، أَهْمَلَ الشَّيْخُ الحِصَانَ وَتَرَكَهُ بِدُونِ رِعَايَةٍ.
قَرَّرَ الشَّيْخُ البَخِيلُ طَرْدَ الحِصَانِ العَجُوزِ. بَحَثَ الحِصَانُ عَنْ طَعَامٍ فِي الطُّرُقَاتِ لَكِنَّهُ لَمْ يَجِدْ شَيْئًا. وَبِيْنَمَا كَانَ الحِصَانُ يَسِيرُ، كَانَ الأَطْفَالُ يَرْمُونَهُ بِالحِجَارَةِ وَتُلَاحِقُهُ الكِلَابُ.
لَمْ يَرْحَمْ أَحَدٌ الحِصَانَ. وَجَدَ الحِصَانُ أَعْشَابًا فَوْقَ نَاقُوسٍ فِي سُوقِ المَدِينَةِ. تَنَاوَلَ الحِصَانُ الأَعْشَابَ فَاهْتَزَّ النَّاقُوسُ وَارْتَفَعَ صَوْتُهُ. بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ، اِجْتَمَعَ القُضَاةُ فَرَأَوا حِصَانًا عَجُوزًا، فَقَالُوا: “هَذَا حِصَانُ البَخِيلِ، جَاءَ يَطْلُبُ العَدَالَةَ، فَقَدْ ظَلَمَ البَخِيلُ هَذَا الحِصَانُ.»
أَحْضَرَتِ الشُّرْطَةُ البَخِيلَ. وَقَفَ البَخِيلُ أَمَامَ القُضَاةِ. قَالَ القَاضِي الأَكْبَرُ: «كَانَ هَذَا الحِصَانُ صَدِيقَكَ. أَنْتَ خُنْتَهُ عِنْدَمَا طَرَدْتَهُ مِنْ مَنْزِلِكَ!»
عَيَّنَ القُضَاةُ رَجُلاً لِكَي يَرْعَى الحِصَانَ، ثُمَّ حَكَمُوا بِنِصْفِ مَالِ البَخِيلِ لِيَشْتَرِي الرَّجُلُ بِهِ طَعَامًا وَشَرَابًا وَمَأوَى لِلْحِصَانِ العَجُوزِ.

Thorne se sumergió en los archivos del caso del joven artista. Las similitudes eran inquietantes: ambos estudios habían sido meticulosamente alterados para crear atmósferas oscuras y ritualísticas. Los símbolos, aunque ligeramente diferentes, compartían una raíz común, una especie de lenguaje secreto que parecía desafiar cualquier interpretación. Intrigado, Thorne comenzó a buscar este texto. Cerca de 190 edificios colapsaron parcial o totalmente en la capital del país el 19 de septiembre de 1985. Al menos 6,000 personas murieron. Todo se vino abajo, sin claridad hacia el futuro. Las telecomunicaciones cayeron, la información surgía lentamente mientras la muerte colmaba el espacio de los sobrevivientes. Una conciencia colectiva se construía rápidamente, a pesar de todo, cuando miles salían a las calles ante lo innombrable. De los escombros y sin saberlo, algo estaba por nacer en México.

No fue, sin embargo, la primera vez que la ciudad sucumbía ante las sacudidas de un terremoto. Veintiocho años antes, en 1957, ocurrió un gran sismo al sureste de Acapulco. Ese terremoto llevó al piso varios inmuebles en la capital, como la Escuela Superior de Comercio y Administración, y edificios habitacionales en la colonia Roma. Otras edificaciones tuvieron que ser demolidas tras la sacudida que, emblemáticamente, recordamos por haber derribado al Ángel de la Independencia. Pero no todo fue destrucción. En palabras del ingeniero civil Luis Esteva, ese sismo representó el nacimiento de la ingeniería sísmica en México; oficio dedicado a la caracterización de las sacudidas sísmicas y cuya escuela mexicana goza del más alto reconocimiento internacional. Con los escasos datos que existían, se comenzaron a trazar directivas de construcción sismo resistente. Así llegó el terremoto de 1979, esta vez al noroeste de Acapulco, que abatiría por completo uno de los edificios de la antigua sede de la Universidad Iberoamericana. Poco se sabía aún de lo implacable que podía ser un terremoto en la Ciudad de México.

El conocimiento sismológico con fines preventivos era insignificante en 1985. Contados sismómetros operaban en la capital. Nadie podía saber, en su justa dimensión, lo que supone edificar una ciudad sobre los sedimentos de antiguos lagos.
