Shall I? Shall We? British Offers and Suggestions | Real British English #031
說明
Many grammar books teach "I shall" and "we shall" as a normal future. Then learners go to Britain and say "I shall go to the shops", and it sounds like a character from an old novel. At the same time, they miss the place where British people really do use shall every day: short, friendly questions such as "Shall I put the kettle on?" Learners who translate directly from their own language often say "Do I open the window?" or "Will I help you?" when they mean an offer.
In this episode:
• Shall i? for offers
• Shall we? for suggestions
• Asking for advice or instructions
• Shan't, and why i shall sounds old-fashioned
• Alternatives with the same meaning
• Practice
• Self-check questions with answers
