I am emotional VS I get emotional V I got emotional

John played the piano in front of a large audience.
After his playing, the audience stood up and applauded.
He cried.
I was in the audience.
The next day, can i say "He was emotional"/"He got emotional" to my friend when I explain the situation?

When the situation is in present. John plays the piano. blar blar..
I am in the music hall with my friend. Can I say "He GETs emotional"/"He GOT emotional" to my friend? We are seeing him crying.

1. He got emotional because you are talking about a time and an event in the past that is now finished (so use simple past). You could also use 'He became emotional'.
2. 'He's getting emotional' because it is happening right now. You would only use 'He gets emotional' in this situation if it happens every time he plays the piano.

"got" is the past of "get" so when the action is simultaneous or very close (playes => cries) no past is needed
