Hi everyone,
My name is Alexandre Applefield-Alvarez.
I was born in Paris, France, but my father is American and my mother is half German and half Cuban. I have a bachelor's degree in Sociology and Education and a Master's in International Public Management. I am trilingual and have lived and worked in French, English, and Spanish-speaking countries, and recently founded my own social enterprise in Colombia. I am passionate about social issues and understanding cultural differences to build a better world.
I have taught different topics (from science to languages, cooking and basketball) to different populations (children, teenagers, teachers, social workers, entrepreneurs, homeless people...). Teaching is about sharing experiences and understanding others. If there is a genuine curiosity for learning, the process gets really fun and easy!
When I begin teaching to a new student, I make sure to understand their expectations in terms of method, pace, and results. Based on that, we define a plan together. As a general rule, I make sure to give my students a lot of freedom in terms of materials, so that they can read articles, watch videos or listen to audios about topics that they are passionate about. Language is a tool that will expand their world. It is a means, not the ends. My objective is for each student to be able to understand and communicate about what they really care about. Every person has their own learning style, and my job is to identify what works for them!我的教材

Alexandre is so patient and so easy to talk to. He gives just the right amount of feedback, enough to actually learn from, but not so much that it derails the conversation. Even when I freeze and don't know what to say next, he keeps things flowing naturally, which has been huge for getting over my fear of speaking French.
I've only had a few classes with him and I can already construct sentences. He makes the lesson feel like a safe space to make mistakes, which is honestly the whole battle when you're learning a new language.
I genuinely considered gatekeeping him, but he's too good not to share with other language learners.
Plus: he speaks Spanish, which has been a huge help. Spanish was the language I was learning before French, so I already know the useful phrases I want to be able to say, and Alexandre easily translates them into French for me on the spot.
Highly recommend! 5 Stars!

I'm glad that I found such a supportive and patient teacher. He is able to explain topics clearly and provides guidance in a way that cultivates critical thinking. Alexandre is a good conversationalist which makes the lessons engaging and fun. Looking forward to more learning.
