Hello! I have been teaching on italki for about four years. Based on my experience, I believe that students who thoroughly study textbooks learn to speak beautiful and good Japanese the fastest. On the other hand, students who focus only on conversation tend to end up with messy grammar, forget words easily, and use a lot of slang, resulting in strange Japanese.
Therefore, my conclusion is that the best approach is either to study a textbook like GENKI with a teacher or to study it independently while practicing conversation with a teacher.

She is encouraging and patient, explains difficult concepts very simply and helps you answer difficult grammar questions. 今日もありがとうございます！
