- How to use 'a' after a verb? I recently came across two sentences: 1."¿por qué no tocas a la tortuga?" - why do you not touch the turtle? 2. "yo veo a un hombre y a una mujer" - I see a man and a woman My question is why is 'a' put after the verb in these cases as I am not quite sure why it is used like that. Thank you for any answers2014年4月15日20

- The whole quote means, it is the person who tries and succeeds/fails who is worth something - not the person who does not try and only criticises the efforts of others who are not afraid to fail. Now to answer your question - the doer of deeds simply means - someone who does things A deed in this context means: an action that is performed intentionally or consciously. (Nb: you question should read - What is the true meaning of this quote? - or a better way to say it would be - what does this quote mean?) Hope this helps :)0 人已投票2013年10月22日1
- The main task of the semicolon is to mark a break that is stronger than a comma but not as final as a full stop. - This is a good definition I found (http://www.oxforddictionaries.com/words/semicolon). Simple examples: (Taken from: http://grammar.about.com/od/rs/g/semicolonterm.htm) - "A banana tree isn't a tree at all; it's the world's largest herb." - "Happiness isn't something you experience; it's something you remember." - "Management is doing things right; leadership is doing the right things." Examples: (Taken from: http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/learningenglish/grammar/learnit/learnitv55.shtml). Where the meaning is closely connected, we can use semi-colons to link two ideas together as an alternative to full stops: 'Some people like to get up early in the morning and get going; others are unable to do anything before nine or ten o’ clock.' Like commas, semi-colons are also used to separate items on a list and are preferred to commas when the items are more grammatically complex: 'You can use our flat at the seaside as long as you observe the following: you do not play loud music late at night; you remember to lock up whenever you leave; you clean up every morning before you go out; you replace any items that you break or damage.' Finally... "Unlike many of the other punctuation marks, there is no occasion on which the semicolon cannot be replaced by another form of punctuation or sentence construction, and its use appears to be gradually declining." (Martin H. Manser, Good Word Guide, 7th ed. A & C Black, 2008 Probably a little bit more than you asked for, but I hope ti answers all your questions about it.0 人已投票2013年10月22日1
- If we re-write the paragraph it becomes clearer: The teachers of these subjects did not appeal to my curious 'and' active mind. The result was that I did not really work at them and so 'remembered' only what stuck from repetition the barest rudiments of a school education. - Here stuck means 'remembered' - only through repetition did any of the things taught 'stick to' or 'stay in' the persons head/brain/memory.0 人已投票2013年10月22日2
- Miniature means very very small for a thing of its kind. Something which is miniature could be called small but generally miniature is something which is extremely small. Also, it is important to note - miniature means a very small version of something of its kind - for example a miniature horse. You would not call anything that is small, miniature, but you can call anything that is miniature small (hope I'm not confusing you) - you would only call something miniature if it was much smaller than the typical size for something of its kind - e.g. a miniature house (a doll house for example). Some examples - My neighbour drives a Nissan Micra, his car is small. My mother drives a Range Rover, her car is big. My brother has a toy car, it is a miniature version of my mother's Range Rover. I could go into more detail, but I worry that I'm already making it too confusing, hopefully someone can give you a clearer answer if you don't understand what I mean.0 人已投票2013年10月22日1
