Common Tautological Expressions in English
A tautology occurs when you express the same idea twice using different words, making one of them redundant. While common in everyday speech, trimming these expressions makes your writing and speaking clearer, sharper, and more professional.

Could someone explain why 'breaks' is used instead of 'broke' for the blank 3 ?
I know some might say it expresses a general truth or a state of mind rather than a specific past action. However, it feels to me like something that actually happened in the story as a past event—meaning it 'broke' the rule/balance at that specific time.
Besides, state verbs like hate or like, which also describe mental states, usually follow tense agreement with the context (for example, 'He didn’t say anything, but he hated the guests wearing shoes inside'). Why doesn't that logic apply here?
