[일상 생활에서의 단어들]
우리는 일상 생활에서 밥을 먹고, 양말을 신고, 텔레비전을 보거나, 커피를 마시며 누군가를 기다리는 일상은 특별한 계기가 없다면 주의 깊게 살피기 어렵다. 만약 일상을 구성하는 여러 낱말들이 때마다 하나씩 우리 앞에 놓이고, 그 낱말들로 각자 짧은 에세이를 쓰기로 한다면? 어쩌면 우리는 양말을 신으려다 문득 인간이 언제부터 양말을 신게 되었는지 궁금해지거나, 오래전 어느 날 허기진 내 앞에 정성껏 차린 밥상을 놓아준 누군가를 떠올리게 될지 모른다.일상의 사물이나 경험을 가리키는 낱말들을 받아든 사람들은 오늘의 내가 되기까지 통과해온 삶의 여러 순간과 오랜 시간 곁을 지켜준 소중한 존재들, 각기 다른 몸과 마음, 감각으로 경험한 세상의 모습을 글에 담을 수 있을 것이다. 사람들이 서로 다른 자리에서, 다른 시각으로 쓴 커피, 양말, 아침 이야기를 읽다 보면 사람들은 자연스럽게 자신의 커피, 양말, 아침 이야기를 생각하게 된다.

Viktor: Morning!
Sam: Hi, how are you?
Viktor: Great, thanks. Hey, did you set up the camera trap yesterday?
Sam: Yes, I did! Mom helped me put it up on the wall above the back door and we pointed it down and towards the grassy bit of garden. Did you?
Viktor: Totally. But something went wrong after I tied it to a tree in the park. Look, I’ve got some amazing video here. Let me forward it a bit … there – look.
Sam: Oh yeah, what is it? Can you zoom in? It’s very small.
Viktor: Can you see it now?
Sam: Ah, it’s a fox. I love the way it’s moving – like something between walking and running. What’s it got in its mouth?
Viktor: I think it’s a rabbit. The fox must be coming back from hunting.
Sam: That’s amazing. Anyway, what went wrong?
Viktor: Watch...
Sam: Woah! Did the camera just fall out of the tree?
Viktor: Yes! It was a windy night, wasn’t it? I must have tied it too loosely.
Sam: Ha-ha, well, you got some great stuff before the camera fell. It didn’t get damaged, did it?
Viktor: No, it didn’t. It’s okay. Did you get anything?
Sam: Yes, actually. We watched it over breakfast. I don’t have it here – I’ll send it to you later, but there were at least a couple of animals in the garden.
Viktor: What did you see?
Sam: Some kind of … well, I think it was a mouse, but it was quite big. My sister thinks it was a rat. Mum didn’t look too happy about that! She told me to get rid of it – whatever it was!
Viktor: Aw, rats are okay. It probably just lives in the garden – and they have to live somewhere.
Sam: I agree – as long as it stays outside and doesn’t come in the house.
Viktor: Anything else?
Sam: Oh, yes – I’m really thrilled about this one – we’re absolutely sure that we saw a hedgehog walking across from the neighbor’s garden to our back fence and then under it to the park behind.
Viktor: Oh, I love hedgehogs!
Sam: Yes, me, too!

How to report what somebody said in Malayalam — and how the language marks where your information came from, which English handles only clumsily.

THE CORE FACT, AND IT IS A BIG ONE
English converts speech when it reports it. "He said: I will come" becomes "he said that he would come" — the pronoun shifts from I to he, the tense from will to would. Two separate operations on every sentence you report.

Malayalam does not do this. Malayalam quotes directly, and closes the quotation with എന്ന്.

അവൻ ഞാൻ വരും എന്ന് പറഞ്ഞു
avan njan varum ennu paranju
word for word: he · I will come · that · said

The ഞാൻ stays as "I", because you are repeating his words, not rebuilding them from your own viewpoint. Once you stop converting, reported speech becomes easier in Malayalam than in English — and learners keep converting for years.

എന്ന് - ennu - the particle that closes a quotation
പറയുക - parayuka - to say
ചോദിക്കുക - chodikkuka - to ask
പറഞ്ഞു - paranju - said
എന്ന് കേട്ടു - ennu kettu - I heard that

AND THE PART ENGLISH LACKS
Malayalam has dedicated ways of marking hearsay — of saying "this is not mine, I am passing it on". English has to reach for "apparently", "supposedly", "I heard", and none of them is grammatical machinery. In Malayalam it is built in, and using it correctly is one of the clearest signals that you have stopped translating.

Try it: report something someone told you today, keeping their "I" as "I". Post it below and I will check it.
