English has ONE word for uncle. One word covers your father's brother, your mother's brother, your father's sister's husband and your mother's sister's husband. Four completely different relationships. Four different men. Four different roles in your life — and English flattens all of them into three letters and a shrug. English does the same to cousin, which covers something like eight distinct relationships, of both sexes, on both sides. Malayalam finds this baffling. And once you understand why, you understand something fundamental about Kerala. Because in Malayalam your mother's brother and your father's brother are not variations of the same thing. They are two entirely different people, with two entirely different sets of obligations toward you — and calling one by the other's name is not a small slip. This is not vocabulary for its own sake.
