Warning! The “Urban Dictionary” is a joke! Please do not cite it.
I’ve noticed more and more people, including native English speakers, referring to the so-called Urban Dictionary. Please take a moment to observe that this is not a reliable source. The definitions are submitted by random users. Note that it is not comparable to the Wikipedia. The Wikipedia will remove unsourced information, and there are also discussion pages to bring up issues. As far as I can tell, all definitions submitted to the Urban Dictionary are accepted without question. Not only that, but anybody who wants can submit a new word at any time. Sure, some of the definitions may be correct, but there’s no way to know which ones are nonsense. In fact, you could submit a word from your native language right now, and within minutes it would magically be an English word.

If we need to look up idiomatic expressions and such, it would be best to use a more reliable source, such as the “Free Dictionary”, instead:

Tell your friends. Friends don’t let friends quote the Urban Dictionary.

Sure, but it's good for slang.

Laura:

You can literally make up words and add them to Urban Dictionary. My friends and I came up with a silly acronym when we were in high school that we would use among each other, I added it to Urban Dictionary, and a few months ago I found out that it somehow ended up on an online dictionary for acronyms. I highly doubt anyone besides my group of high school friends ever used it.

Wikipedia is not accepted as a resource for academic/professional writing, but it has higher standards than Urban Dictionary.

Thanks for your comment, Richard!
Thanks, Serendipity, for that excellent piece of research. (or did you write that yourself?) Of course it’s completely true. The Urban Dictionary is certainly the fount of all wisdom and knowledge. Definitely not a joke. :)
