What does it mean to get old?

How do you feel about getting old?

Are you scared of losing your youth?

Or do you think that every age has its advantages and one should enjoy them?

This is the beautiful saga from the rock-opera
'Yunona and Avos'

Saga
by Andrei Voznesensky

You will rise me at dawn, and without shoes
Lead to doors, but not stepping the threshold.
You will never forget me in future,
Never you'll meet me further in life your's.

When protecting you from dreadful cold,
I'll think: Oh my God! How to bear this?
I shall never forget you in my thought,
I shall never see you while living.

And your eyes, as the brown large cherries,
Twinkle from the cold wind in the air.
To return - is the bad mark, it's obvious.
I shall never see you in my life span.

And two phrases will wave up to heaven,
So pointless far and so sensless:
I shall never see you in my life span,
I shall never forget you, my dearest.

Even if we return to the earth once,
For the second time, said by religion,
We for certain shall miss then each other,
I shall never see you in my living.

And this river, with a shivering surface,
And the stock exchange, the Admiralty,
I shall never forget in my inner thought,
I shall never see them in reality.

And it will be in that time negligible
Our incomprehension of each one;
We - are two warm and living such creatures
Before emptiness cold and lifeless.

Russian Literature

Andrey Voznesensky (12 May 1933 – 1 June 2010)

рыдало по-русски, in English, in Polish-
you promise? Astonish…

Translation (from youtube)

You got through to me, throug the fearful dark:
"D'you remember me?"
well, how could I forget you, Angel-demon?
"D'you remember me?"
your voice insisted, Signing and sinking -
"D'you remember me?" "D'you remember me?"
an echo whispered in the darkness telephonish -
it sobbed in Russian, In English, in Polish -
you promise? Astonish?.. D'you remember me?
D'you remember me, the road to Bronnitsy?
And your nose powdered from toyr morning doughnut?
In the overnight plane the unfastened braces -
You, armchair, d'you remember us?
Understand, be deceived, call someone's name:
And you...
D'you remember me? Like the ambilance service,
In a forgetful century remember just one thing -
"D'you remember me?"

Boris Pasternak (2). Russian Literature.

1946

Hamlet

The murmurs ebb; onto the stage I enter.
I am trying, standing in the door,
To discover in the distant echoes
What the coming years may hold in store.

The nocturnal darkness with a thousand
Binoculars is focused onto me.
Take away this cup, O Abba Father,
Everything is possible to Thee.

I am fond of this Thy stubborn project,
And to play my part I am content.
But another drama is in progress,
And, this once, O let me be exempt.

But the plan of action is determined,
And the end irrevocably sealed.
I am alone; all round me drowns in falsehood:
Life is not a walk across a field.

Hamlet

The stir is over. I step forth on the boards.
Leaning against an upright at the entrance,
I strain to make the far-off echo yield
A cue to the events that may come in my day.

Night and its murk transfix and pin me,
Staring through thousands of binoculars.
If thou be willing, Abba, Father,
Remove this cup from me.

I cherish this, Thy rigorous conception,
And I consent to play this part therein;
But another play is running at this moment,
So, for the present, release me from the cast.

And yet, the order of the acts has been schemed and plotted,
And nothing can avert the final curtain's fall.
I stand alone. All else is swamped by Pharisaism.
To live life to the end is not a childish task.

Fyodor Tyutchev. (1803-1873)

K.Б.

В отжившем сердце ожило;

To K.B.

You're here again - and of a sudden
A warmth long gone floods my dead heart,
And all I thought forgot, unbidden
Returns, of me becomes a part.

Just as spring's breath may soft come stealing
Upon the air on late fall's day
And rouse in us a vanished feeling
Of life, of something young and gay -

So of past years do I recover
The richness, and on your sweet face
With all the ardour of a lover
In reawakened rapture gaze.

Too long apart, drawn are we nearer
Once more - you're here, 'tis not a dream!
Sounds, ne'er within me stilled, the clearer
At sight of you and louder seem.

Remembrance?- No! The rustling pages
Of life turn fast - life's full again.
Your loveliness stays ever changeless,
My love for you unchanged remains.

I met you and the past
came back to life in my dead heart.
Remembering a golden time,
my heart became so warm.

Just as in late autumn
there are days, the transient hour,
when suddenly spring wafts again
and something stirs within us,

so, winnowed within by the breath
of fullness my soul knew in those years,
with a rapture I thought I'd forgotten,
I stare into your dear face.

As if we'd been apart for ages
I stare at you and think I'm dreaming,
and suddenly sounds unsilenced in me
could be heard within me, but louder!

That was more than reminiscence:
my life began to talk once more,
as did in you that very same charm,
as did in my soul that very same love!

Marina Tsvetaeva. Russian literature.

Marina Tsvetaeva (1892-1941).

One of the most original and sincere Russian poets of the 20th century.

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0XvBT32L7b0">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0XvBT32L7b0</a>

I like it that you're burning not for me…

I like it that you're burning not for me,
I like it that it's not for you I'm burning
And that the heavy sphere of Planet Earth
Will underneath our feet no more be turning
I like it that I can be unabashed
And humorous and not to play with words
And not to redden with a smothering wave
When with my sleeves I'm lightly touching yours.

I like it, that before my very eyes
You calmly hug another; it is well
That for me also kissing someone else
You will not threaten me with flames of hell.
That this my tender name, not day nor night,
You will recall again, my tender love;
That never in the silence of the church
They will sing “halleluiah” us above.

With this my heart and this my hand I thank
You that – although you don't know it -
You love me thus; and for my peaceful nights
And for rare meetings in the hour of sunset,
That we aren't walking underneath the moon,
That sun is not above our heads this morning,
That you – alas – are burning not for me
And that – alas – it's not for you I'm burning.
