Over the last hundred years or so, there has been a tendency in English to lighten up on punctuation. A good rule is to omit commas whenever you can without creating confusion. Offhand, I can only think of three cases where commas are required: items in series (Jesus, Mary, and Joesph...); nonrestrictive apposition (my mother, Ann, was...); and quotes ("I think," Descartes said, "therefore I am.").

By the way, your post was correctly puncuated. There were minor mistakes, but none with commas. I think Aegis was joking with you. Though Paul is right too. You could add those commas, but they aren't required. Personally, I would omit them, just as you did.
