They are similar in use, but a bit different.
Holiday is used in the " British English ", while Vacation in " American English ".
Their use: 1- When we talk about Official, National, or Religious days, we always use " Holiday ", and that means we also use it in American English. EX: Christmas holidays, The New Year holidays.
2- School/University terms breaks. EX: The university campus is empty during summer Holiday/Vacation.
3- Staycation (to know the use of the word, please check my Vocabulary set). EX: They planned a relaxing staycation holiday in their own city, or They planned a relaxing staycation in their own city.
4- Take time off school/work (British English): Go somewhere and stay there for your time off. EX: We spent our holiday in France.
5- Take time off school/work (American English): I might travel somewhere or I might not. EX: I am taking a vacation.
