私の趣味は言語の勉強です。スペイン語とタイ語とドイツ語の勉強をしています。その中でも今日はタイ語の勉強について話してみたいと思います。

私とタイ語の出会いは2年前です。タイに3か月滞在する機会があったので暇潰しとしてタイ語でもかじってみようかなと思ったのがきっかけです。そこで世界中の国々からのクラスメイトと仲良くなって一緒にタイ語を勉強していくうちに、せっかく3か月勉強してきたんだから、ここでやめるのは勿体ないんじゃないか、もっと上手くなりたいと思うようになりました。タイ語の先生がとても良い先生だったことも関係していると思います。
それからタイ語の練習という口実で今まで4回ほどタイに行って毎回2、3か月滞在しています。今では基本的な会話ができるようになって、タイ人の友達も何人かできて、タイでの生活もますます楽しくなりました。

元々タイの文化に興味があったとかではないんですが、困った時に助けてくれたタイ人の優しさや、日本人にはない寛容さがあるところに徐々に惹かれていきました。私の今の目標はタイ人の先生や友達ともっと楽しくタイ語で話せるようになることです。まだまだ道のりは長そうですが、2年前は挨拶もできなかったレベルだったので毎日の勉強を継続して頑張りたいと思います。

はい、こんにちは。今回はポッドキャストの28回目です。私は最近、鼻水が止まりません。季節が変わるときは、寒暖差アレルギーというアレルギーが出ます。寒暖差アレルギーは、気温の差が7度以上になると出やすいそうです。特に朝と夜がひどいです。寝不足になるのは辛いですが、私はずっと家にいるので、昼に休むことができます。最近のレッスンはだいたい午前中です。

Hello. This is episode 28 of my podcast. I have had a runny nose recently. When the seasons change, I get an allergy called a cold weather allergy. I’m told that cold-weather allergies are more likely to appear when the temperature difference is more than seven degrees Celsius. It is particularly bad in the morning and at night. It is hard for me to sleep, but I am at home all the time, so I can rest during the day. My lessons these days are usually in the morning.

最近また、音楽を作り始めました。私は美術大学に通っていました。入学試験のために二年ぐらいデッサンを勉強しました。音楽や、美術や、スポーツなど、文化的な活動はなんでもそうですが、頭で理解することより、練習を通して経験することが重要です。先生のアドバイスは感覚的な表現が多く、同じ経験がないと理解できないからです。筋肉だけではなく、耳や目なども、活動するためのトレーニングが重要です。

I recently started making music again. I used to go to art college. I studied drawing for about two years for the entrance exam. As with any cultural activity, be it music, art or sports, it is more important to experience it through practice than to understand it in your head. This is because the teacher’s advice is often expressed in sensory terms, which cannot be understood without the same experience. Physical muscle training is important for certain activities. However, training our hearing sense and visual sense is important too.

なので20代のときは、ほとんど毎日絵を描いていました。しかし、それは思っていたより楽しくありませんでした。私は小さい頃から絵を描くことが好きでしたが、絵を描くことで、空想の世界にいることが好きでした。人に絵を見せて褒められることよりも、一人で絵を描いて楽しんでいる時間の方が重要でした。評価にはあまり興味がありませんでした。

So when I was in my twenties, I drew almost every day. But it wasn’t as much fun as I thought it would be. I had loved drawing since I was a little girl, but I loved it because it let me be in my own imaginary world. It was more important to me to spend time alone drawing and having fun than to show my drawings to others and receive compliments. I was not really interested in evaluation.

Anita: OK, so we’ve got three possibilities for the advertisement we will be using here and I want to talk about each of them with you and get your point of view. So first of all, here’s number one. What do you think, Gerry?
Gerry: Oh, that’s interesting! I like the colors. They’re very warm. I didn’t think a cartoon would work very well, but I think this is quite fun. Tina, what do you think?
Tina: Personally, I don’t think it works. We’re really aiming at customers who are 20 and older. I think it might look a little young for them.
Brett: I’d agree with Tina, I’m not very keen on it. These will be used in magazines and on trains and buses. I don’t think it will really stand out. It’s very nice to look at, but I don’t think it will really get anyone’s attention.
Gerry: OK. I see what you mean, Brett. Well, let’s have a look at the others then. Well, I think it’s great, but I may revise my opinion when I see the others.
Anita: I will say that this one is cheaper than the other two. Right, then. Here’s number two.
Brett: Oh, I like that much more. It’s really creative. That’s a beautiful photograph and the name of the product is really clear.
Tina: I’m not sure about the model they used. She’s beautiful, don’t get me wrong. But she looks a bit unhappy. I don’t think that gives the right message.
Gerry: I like it, but I don’t think I feel strongly about it. I’m sure we could get them to find an older model if we wanted. It just seems very serious compared to the last one and I’m not sure I like it as much.
Anita: Yes, although I should point out that if we do that, it will add to the cost of the advertising. Also, I don’t know if this will change anyone’s mind, but the cost of using a photograph for the advert will be far higher than using a cartoon. About 40% more altogether which will leave us less to use for future advertising.
Brett: Well, I think this would work really well. If we need to change the model, we can do that. But I think it’s really exciting to look

Why we need to protect polar bears

Polar bears are being increasingly threatened by the effects of climate change, but their disappearance could have far-reaching consequences. They are uniquely adapted to the extreme conditions of the Arctic Circle, where temperatures can reach -40°C. One reason for this is that they have up to 11 centimetres of fat underneath their skin. Humans with comparative levels of adipose tissue would be considered obese and would be likely to suffer from diabetes and heart disease. Yet the polar bear experiences no such consequences.

A 2014 study by Shi Ping Liu and colleagues sheds light on this mystery. They compared the genetic structure of polar bears with that of their closest relatives from a warmer climate, the brown bears. This allowed them to determine the genes that have allowed polar bears to survive in one of the toughest environments on Earth. Liu and his colleagues found the polar bears had a gene known as APoB, which reduces levels of low-density lipoproteins (LDLs) – a form of ‘bad’ cholesterol. In humans, mutations of this gene are associated with increased risk of heart disease. Polar bears may therefore be an important study model to understand heart disease in humans.
