Thinking in Malayalam — The Five-Stage Method That Stops You Translating | Learn Malayalam #178
Descrizione
Every learner eventually asks the same question: when will I stop translating in my head? Almost every course dodges it, or answers with a platitude about immersion. Here is the actual answer, and a method you can start tonight.
First, the honest description of what is happening. When you speak Malayalam now, you are doing three operations: you form the thought in your own language, you retrieve Malayalam equivalents, you assemble them by remembered rules. Three steps, each taking time — which is why you are slow, and why twenty minutes of conversation exhausts you.
A fluent speaker does one step. The thought arrives already in the language.
Getting from three steps to one is not a grammar problem. You already have enough grammar. You need a great deal of practice producing Malayalam without the middle step, and the only way to get it is to produce Malayalam when there is no listener and no pressure. Which means talking to yourself. I am completely serious — private speech is the most underused tool in adult language learning, and it is free, unlimited and available every hour of your life.
THE FIVE STAGES, IN ORDER — a week or two each
1. NAMING. Just nouns, no sentences. വാതിൽ · ജനൽ · കസേര · വെള്ളം · മഴ · കാർ · പട്ടി. Most learners skip this because it feels childish. It is not childish — it is how the link gets built. Do it for a week.
2. NARRATING ACTIONS. Add the verb, in the present. ഞാൻ വെള്ളം കുടിക്കുന്നു · ഞാൻ വാതിൽ തുറക്കുന്നു · ഞാൻ ഇരിക്കുന്നു. The action supplies the meaning, so no translation is required.
3. to 5. The remaining stages build from there, through past narration and into unrehearsed inner speech.
