В повести Толстого «Смерть Ивана Ильича» (перевод на английский Эйлмера и Луизы Мод) слово это переводилось с помощью французского заимствования ennui. 

Некоторые считают, что тоска является одним из ключевых концептов русской культуры.

В романе Пушкина «Евгений Онегин» читаем:
«Недуг, которого причину
Давно бы отыскать пора,
Подобный англицкому сплину,
Короче: русская хандра
Им овладела понемногу;
Он застрелиться, слава богу,
Попробовать не захотел,
Но к жизни вовсе охладел».

Я недавно перечитал «Мёртвые души» Гоголя. Эта великолепная книга написана по-русски, о России и для русских. Вот замечательная цитата из неё:
«Почему слышится и раздаётся немолчно в ушах твоя тоскливая, несущаяся по всей длине и ширине твоей, от моря до моря, песня? Что в ней, в этой песне? Что зовёт, и рыдает, и хватает за сердце? ... Русь! чего же ты хочешь от меня?»

Главный герой книги «Москва-Петушки» Ерофеева утверждал:
«Я не верю, чтобы кто-нибудь ещё из вас таскал в себе это горчайшее месиво... Больше всего в нём скорби и страха ..., и ещё немоты».

Одна из причин тоски -- огромные людские потери в войнах, что отразилось в народных песнях, таких как «Чёрный ворон».

The most despicable lesson in history  أَحْقَرُ دَرْسٍ فِي التَّارِيخِ

Wat-san appears in "Minna no Nihongo," but can everyone pronounce the name correctly?

It's Wat, not "Waat." This pronunciation is very important. Many students pronounce it without properly stopping the sound. Even if you don't pronounce "Wat-san" correctly, most people will understand. However, many similar words will come up later, such as "kite," "kitte," "kaite," and "katte."

If you don't properly skip the small "っ," even Japanese people can get confused often.

Please try pronouncing it once: "Wat-san." You shouldn’t hold your breath tightly in your stomach. You also shouldn’t hold the air in your mouth. If you do, you’ll definitely end up saying "Waat-san" again. Use a little of your throat and stomach. It’s "Wat-san."
