Malayalam Pronunciation — The Six Sounds Foreigners Always Get Wrong | Learn Malayalam #340
Descrizione
Your accent in Malayalam — the specific mistakes speakers of particular languages make, and how to fix your own.
Adult pronunciation errors are not random. They are predictable from the sound system you already speak. Your mouth has spent decades ignoring distinctions your first language does not use, and it will keep ignoring them unless you intervene. Linguists call it transfer — so if I know your first language, I can tell you in advance what you are getting wrong.
I am Dr. Reshmi R. Nair, an applied linguist from Kerala. I have taught hundreds of learners to speak Malayalam as it is actually spoken.
1. DENTAL AGAINST RETROFLEX
ത (tha) against ട (ta). For ത, the tongue tip touches the back of the upper front teeth — the t of French, Spanish, Italian and Russian. For ട, the tip curls back to the ridge behind the teeth. English has neither: its t sits between the two, so an English speaker hears the same sound twice.
The split runs through the series: ത / ട · ദ / ഡ · ന / ണ. Malayalam is unusually rich here, separating dental, alveolar and retroflex nasals as even other Indian languages do not.
2. ASPIRATION
ക (ka) against ഖ (kha) · ഗ (ga) against ഘ (gha) · പ (pa) against ഫ (pha) · ത (tha) against ഥ (thha) · ച (cha) against ഛ (chha)
The second of each pair carries an audible puff of air. English speakers can make it but cannot control it, because English aspirates automatically at the start of a word and not after an s, with no speaker aware of it. French, Spanish, Italian, Russian and Japanese speakers have a harder job: the sound has to be built from nothing.
3. VOWEL LENGTH
Short against long is phonemic in Malayalam — it changes the word, not just the flavour. A learner who treats length as expressive rather than contrastive will be misunderstood.
The lesson goes on to the remaining three contrasts, and to the specific fix for each first language.
What is your first language? Tell me in the comments and I will tell you your predictable error.
