Leaving Words Out: Short Native Answers | Spoken Malayalam #152
Descrizione
English needs a subject in almost every sentence: "Did you eat?" "Yes, I ate." English speakers carry this habit into Malayalam and answer in full, textbook sentences: അതെ, ഞാൻ ഭക്ഷണം കഴിച്ചു (athe, njaan bhakshanam kazhichu) = yes, I have eaten food. It is correct, but at home it sounds like a form being filled in. Native speakers drop whatever the situation already makes clear, the "I", the "you", the "food", and often answer with one or two words.
In this episode:
• Dropping the subject and object
• Yes is the verb, no is illa
• One-word answers to question words
• When short is rude and when long is stiff
• Understanding half-sentences
• Language bridge
• Practice
• Self-check questions with answers
