“You recently completed a new course at an international college. The college Principal has asked you to write a report on it highlighting its strengths and weaknesses. You should also make recommendations about how the course could be improved”: The “English for university” course from Cambridge University has been very helpful to achieve my target level, mainly due to its unusual approach. One of the greatest strengths of the course is being part of the English culture while staying at the college campus, as you are constantly recommended tourist attractions, restaurants, music and films. Moreover, students get to experience those activities with each other, so friendships that allow a daily practice of the language are created. Practical vocabulary lessons rather than theorical ones are very remarkable too. I had never had such experiences in previous language courses. In spite of the already mentioned, the lack of speaking practice and pronunciation corrections has been really disappointing. Not stressing this skill enough has unbalanced the student’s level. Too specific grammar lessons have also overwhelmed foreigners who did not have the necessity of learning so many exceptions, instead of focusing on general rules. In conclusion, although the course has had excellent results in my college experience, I would introduce individual speaking lessons to receive personal feedback. An online version could be done to increase the availability of international students who cannot travel because of limited budgets or pandemic restrictions. *I'd appreciate not only grammar/spelling corrections but also corrections regarding the structure of a report.
