Then I quit a 10-year career in law to become a language teacher, and I haven’t regretted it for a second. At 29, I learned my first foreign language, but fear of embarrassing myself kept me from practicing conversation for five years. By 30, I made sure never to repeat that mistake: I spoke two languages and was learning two more. At 36, I started lifting, put together my own diet, and lost 22 pounds. Calisthenics, climbing, Muay Thai, BJJ, Chinese pole, parkour. At 37, I deadlifted more than twice my body weight. Becoming mentally and physically strong changed my life. At 38, I packed up and moved back to my hometown: São Paulo. I missed the sushi so much. All this is to say there’s no such thing as being too old, too shy, too weird, or not cut out to learn. With grit and discipline, you can learn anything. My lessons are almost entirely interactive and focused on getting you to use the language somehow, not on me talking for an hour.
