If you visit Slovakia, there are a few dishes that you absolutely must try to experience the rich and hearty flavors of Slovak cuisine. First and foremost, you have to try bryndzové halušky. It’s the national dish here, made from soft potato dumplings that are covered in bryndza (a creamy and tangy sheep cheese) and sprinkled with crispy bacon bits. It’s rich, comforting, and full of flavor, and it perfectly represents the heartiness of Slovak food. It’s often served as a main dish, but you can also find it in many Slovak restaurants as a traditional treat. Another dish that’s a true Slovak classic is kapustnica, a savory sauerkraut soup. It’s made with smoked meats like sausage and ham, along with vegetables and spices, and sometimes even a bit of dried mushrooms. It’s perfect for colder months and is often enjoyed during Christmas time, though you’ll find it year-round. For dessert, you should try trdelník, a sweet pastry that’s famous in Slovakia, especially at festivals and markets. It’s made by wrapping dough around a rod, then baking it until golden and crispy. It’s rolled in sugar and nuts and sometimes filled with ice cream or chocolate – it’s a true treat for your taste buds. Also, don’t miss out on lokše, which are thin potato pancakes often served with duck or goose, or sometimes filled with jam or poppy seeds for a sweeter version.

It was a sunny day. Hearing that our local amusement park had reopened after renovations, we were excited to go. Our enthusiasm quickly faded, though. After what felt like endless loops around the parking lot, Mom still couldn't find a single space. Inside, the crowds were overwhelming. Frustrated, we abandoned our plans and drove to MeeMaw's for a culinary outing downtown — a specialty of my mom's. She eventually chose a restaurant known for its shark fin soup, which was doing a promotion. I'm aware of the environmental concerns, but it's a traditional and well-known dish here. It makes me wonder how our ancestors ever thought to eat fins. It's like they said, “Let’s cut off their fins for dinner and dump the fish back into the ocean. Then we’ll just hope they grow back in time for tomorrow’s meal — there goes applause.” It's unbelievable. Technically I just had a bony dinner. Despite the amusement park thing, we enjoyed the day.

During her routine night walk my Mom bought a bunch of cilantro for one yuan (US$0.14) and half dozen of lettuces for 1.4 yuan (US$0.19) . She bought them from a vegetable street stall at the outskirt area of our community and of which owners is an old couple. The old couple rents one third of a community grocery but to catch more flow of customers and to increase the income, they used to set up the vegetable stall in front of the grocery... "...staffs quite cheap. " my Mom praised as she arranged the cilantro and lettuces in the kitchen. That is true. Over the past year of 2024 it seems that things have become even cheaper... Another thing that impresses me is that the old couple usually keeps the vegetables stall from some 7:00 am in the morning to 11:00 pm in the evening. Under the economic downturn, it seems that they have to prolong their business hours to try to obtain more deals... Then I thought about my aunt. After leaving the big city, she now live at my hometown, a remote coastal town where she makes her living by doing handicrafts. She also starts working at 7:00 am and will work long hours till some 21:30 pm at a toy workshop... In a place where there is shortage of industries and employment, that seems the best job she could get... So with economic slump, it seems things are not easy in the recent years... In spite of the difficulties, people manage to cope with these and keep float.
