At C2 the hard part is what the words are doing. Malayali families often ask, refuse and close a topic indirectly, to protect the relationship. English speakers take every line literally: they hear "it's hot in here" as weather talk, and "let's see" as a yes. In this episode: • Hints that are requests • Hesitation that means no • Silence and changing the subject • The first refusal • Repairing a misread • Language bridge • Practice • Self-check questions with answers Key phrases from this episode: നോക്കാം (nokkaam) = let's see. Without a time or a detail, it usually means probably not. ഞാൻ ഒന്ന് നോക്കട്ടെ (njaan onnu nokkatte) = let me see ആലോചിക്കാം (aalochikkaam) = I'll think about it അത് പോട്ടെ (athu potte) = let that go, never mind that ഉം (um) = hmm. A short, flat ഉം can mean reluctance, not agreement. എന്താ ഒരു മൗനം? (enthaa oru maunam?) = why so quiet? എന്താ മിണ്ടാത്തത്? (enthaa mindaathathu?) = why aren't you saying anything? എനിക്ക് ഒന്നും വേണ്ട (enikku onnum venda) = I don't need anything സോറി, ഞാൻ ശ്രദ്ധിച്ചില്ല (sori, njaan shraddhichilla) = sorry, I didn't notice എന്തോ പറയാൻ ഉണ്ടല്ലോ (entho parayaan undallo) = there's something you want to say Learn Spoken Malayalam at Home: a complete course in everyday spoken Malayalam for English speakers.
