Nous n'avons pas aller à la plage ce week-end. Il pleuvait et j'ai dû travailler. Nous sommes allés à un festival de musique à la place. Il y avait beaucoup de bons musiciens.

English grammar enthusiasts don't want to end a sentence with a preposition (words such as of, to, or by), so "Who are you speaking of?" is properly written as "Of whom are you speaking?"
"Who" becomes "whom" because it's the object of the preposition "of".
You are also correct in saying "To whom are you speaking?"

You could use so, as in "He fell from the top of the metal staircase, so he broke his leg." If you are going to change the sentence this way it might be better to say "...and he broke his leg." Or you could say "...consequently breaking his leg."

In this case "grim realism" means something very serious. The author is stating that the responses are inadequate given the seriousness of the situation.
