한국의 결혼 문화는 오랜 전통을 지니고 있으며, 시대에 따라 다양한 변화를 겪고 있습니다. 과거에는 부모님과 가족의 의견이 중요한 역할을 했지만, 현대에는 개인의 선택과 가치관이 더 큰 영향을 미치고 있습니다. 또한 결혼식의 형태와 절차도 변하고 있으며, 전통적인 방식과 현대적인 방식이 공존하는 모습이 나타나고 있습니다.
전통적인 한국 결혼식은 ‘전통 혼례’라고 불리며, 한복을 입고 전통적인 예식을 진행하는 것이 특징입니다. 혼례는 보통 ‘대례’라고 불리는 주요 의식으로 구성되며, 신랑과 신부가 절을 올리고 부모님께 감사의 인사를 드리는 것이 중요합니다. 또한, ‘폐백’이라는 의식이 있는데, 이는 신부가 시댁 어른들에게 절을 올리고 축복을 받는 과정입니다. 폐백에서는 대추와 밤을 던지며 자손 번창을 기원하는 풍습도 있습니다.
오늘날 한국의 결혼식은 호텔, 웨딩홀, 야외에서 진행되는 경우가 많습니다. 결혼식은 보통 1시간 내외로 짧게 진행되며, 신랑과 신부가 드레스를 입고 행진하는 서양식 결혼식 형태를 따릅니다. 일부 커플은 전통 혼례와 현대적인 결혼식을 결합하여 진행하기도 합니다.
또한, 최근에는 소규모 결혼식, 즉 ‘스몰 웨딩’을 선호하는 사람들이 늘어나고 있습니다. 스몰 웨딩은 가족과 가까운 친구들만 초대하여 간소하게 진행하는 방식으로, 경제적인 부담을 줄이고 더욱 의미 있는 결혼식을 만들고자 하는 사람들이 선택하는 경우가 많습니다.
과거에는 결혼이 필수적인 과정으로 여겨졌지만, 최근에는 ‘비혼’(결혼을 하지 않는 삶)이나 ‘동거’(결혼 없이 함께 사는 것)를 선택하는 사람들이 늘어나고 있습니다. 또한, 늦은 나이에 결혼하는 ‘만혼(晩婚)’ 현상도 증가하고 있으며, 이는 개인의 직업과 경제적 안정성을 우선시하는 사회적 분위기와 관련이 있습니다.
이것과 함께 ‘맞벌이 부부’가 일반적인 형태가 되었으며, 결혼 후에도 경제적 역할을 함께 분담하는 것이 자연스러운 문화로 자리 잡고 있습니다. 부부가 가사일과 육아를 함께하는 것도 점점 중요하게 여겨지고 있습니다.
한국에서는 결혼식뿐만 아니라 집 마련, 혼수(결혼 준비에 필요한 물품) 등 많은 비용이 필요하기 때문에 결혼을 부담스럽게 느끼는 경우가 많습니다. 특히, 집값 상승으로 인해 신혼집을 구하는 것이 어려워지면서 결혼을 미루거나 포기하는 사람들도 늘어나고 있습니다. 이에 따라 정부와 기업에서는 신혼부부를 위한 주거 지원 정책을 마련하고 있으며, 보다 실용적인 결혼 문화를 만들어가려는 노력이 이루어지고 있습니다.
한국의 결혼 문화는 전통적인 요소와 현대적인 요소가 조화를 이루며 변화하고 있습니다. 개인의 가치관과 라이프스타일이 다양해지면서 결혼의 의미와 방식도 점점 변화하고 있습니다. 앞으로 한국의 결혼 문화가 어떻게 발전할지 기대됩니다.

CHARLES: That’s her friend Mary. Didn’t you meet her at 
Steve’s party?
JIM: No, I wasn’t at Steve’s party.
CHARLES: Oh! Then let me introduce you to her now. Mary, this is
my friend Jim.
MARY: Hi, Jim. Nice to meet you.
JIM: You, too. Would you like a drink?
MARY: Sure, let’s go get one.


LANGUAGE NOTES
• “Who’s” is the contracted form of who is. It is pronounced the same way as “whose” (/
huwz/), but the meaning is different.
• Didn’t you meet her …? Notice that this is a negative question. Charles thought that Jim 
had met Mary before. He is now surprised that Jim does not know Mary, and so he uses a 
negative question to show his surprise.
• I wasn’t at Steve’s party. Notice that the emphasis here is on “at” although prepositions 
normally have weak stress. In this case, “at” means “there” (I wasn’t there).
• Mary, this is my friend Jim. This is a friendly way to introduce two people. It’s 
common to follow this with “Jim, this is Mary.” In this case, Mary says “Hi, Jim” first.
• Nice to meet you. This is a typical response after you’ve been introduced to someone.
• “Sure” is often used in informal conversation to mean “yes.”

71 – El museo del ferrocarril con mi tío

El Sombrerón es un personaje misterioso que aparece en los pueblos rurales de Colombia, especialmente en los Llanos Orientales. Se trata de un hombre alto, delgado y elegante, que siempre lleva un gran sombrero negro que cubre su rostro. Aparece por las noches montado en un caballo negro y es conocido por enamorar y engañar a mujeres jóvenes.

El Sombrerón las corteja con melodías de guitarra y dulces palabras, pero una vez que caen en su encanto, las jóvenes empiezan a enfermarse misteriosamente. Se debilitan cada día más, como si su energía fuera drenada por este extraño ser. La única manera de librarse de él es evitar el contacto visual con su sombrero o usar crucifijos y oraciones para alejarlo.

There are many expressions about apples. You might have heard that "an apple a day keeps the doctor away," or if you care about someone a lot, you might call them "the apple of my eye." Here are a few more apple expressions!

If you're surprised that something has happened, or have just beaten someone at something and want to gloat, you can say, "How do you like them apples?" This expression, which uses incorrect grammar, was made popular by the 1997 film Good Will Hunting, but it's been used for over 100 years.

So if the best tennis player in your school has been laughing at your tennis skills, but you beat them in a match, you might say, "How do you like them apples?"

If you want a second chance at something, you could ask for a "second bite of the apple," or a "second bite of the cherry."

So if the top tennis player wants another chance to beat you, you can say, "Okay, I'll give you a second bite of the apple. Let's play again tomorrow."

When someone or something destroys a plan, or makes something difficult, you can say they have "upset the apple cart." This expression has been around since the 18th century, and probably comes from an older Roman expression, "upset the cart," which had the same meaning.

So if it rains the next day, you might say, "Oh no! We were going to play tennis today, but this rain has upset the apple cart!"
