Your Next 12 Months of Malayalam: A Month-by-Month Plan | #346
描述
A month-by-month plan for what to actually do with the Malayalam you already have, with milestones you can test yourself against so you know whether you are moving.
MONTHS 1–3 — CONSOLIDATION. The goal is not new material. It is making what you have automatic. The script should stop being decoded and start being recognised, so a bus board or shop sign just reads. Your core few hundred words should move from recognisable to available — a different thing entirely. And start narrating your own day to yourself in Malayalam.
MONTHS 4–6 — PRODUCTION. Milestone: ten minutes with a real person, timed, without switching languages.
MONTHS 7–9 — THE COMPREHENSION LEAP. The hardest quarter, and where most people quit, because the work stops being visible. Your speaking improves slowly and your listening improves invisibly, and it feels like nothing is happening. The work is volume: films with subtitles then without, voice notes, news bulletins (excellent, because the same stories repeat all day), and podcasts and long interviews — the best value of all, because they are unscripted and long.
Add dialect exposure this quarter. Deliberately listen to Thiruvananthapuram, Thrissur, Kochi and Malabar speech, so your ear is not tuned to one variety only. And start writing — one paragraph a week, corrected by somebody. Writing forces precision that speech lets you dodge.
MONTHS 10–12 — and what a year of this actually buys you.
Slow and clear, for English speakers, heritage learners and the Malayali diaspora. No prior classes needed — start the twelve months from wherever you are today.
Which quarter are you in right now? Comment below and I will tell you what to do next.
