Common Malayalam Mistakes Learners Keep Making — A Diagnostic List | Learn Malayalam #349
描述
The mistakes good Malayalam learners keep making — a diagnostic list, and how to catch yourself before they set.
Second-language research calls it fossilisation. A learner produces a wrong form, is understood anyway, is never corrected, produces it again — and after a few hundred repetitions it stops being an error and becomes simply how that person speaks. It is why someone can live in a country for twenty years and still make beginner mistakes. The cure is not more study. It is noticing.
I am Dr. Reshmi R. Nair, an applied linguist from Kerala. I have taught hundreds of learners to speak Malayalam as it is actually spoken.
1. USING അല്ല (alla) WHERE ഇല്ല (illa) IS NEEDED
അല്ല (alla) negates identity; ഇല്ല (illa) negates existence and actions.
പണം ഇല്ല (panam illa) - there is no money
ഇത് പണമല്ല (ithu panamalla) - this is not money
The single most common grammatical error, and it does not go away without attention.
2. SHIFTING THE PRONOUN IN REPORTED SPEECH
English makes you say "he said he would come". Malayalam quotes directly:
അവൻ ഞാൻ വരും എന്ന് പറഞ്ഞു (avan njaan varum ennu paranju)
3. TRANSLATING THE ENGLISH "MAKE"
"I made him do it" is not two words in Malayalam. It is a causative suffix: ചെയ്യിച്ചു (cheyyichu).
4. USING COME AND GO BACKWARDS
വരിക (varika) is motion toward the speaker, പോകുക (pokuka) away from. "I am coming to your house" is, in Malayalam, going.
5. PICKING THE WRONG VERB FOR GIVE
തരിക (tharika) when the receiver is me or us; കൊടുക്കുക (kodukkuka) for everyone else. English has one verb, so your instinct will choose at random.
6. GETTING THE PRONOUN LEVEL WRONG
നീ (nee) to someone you have just met is too familiar. നിങ്ങൾ (ningal) to a close friend after a year is cold — and moving up the scale mid-conversation reads as anger.
Which of these six is yours? Say the number in the comments and I will give you a drill for it.
