Spoken Shortcuts: How Real Malayalam Squeezes Words | Spoken Malayalam #079
描述
You learn a neat sentence from a book, then hear a family say something that sounds half as long. Nobody is speaking badly; spoken Malayalam simply squeezes words, the way English turns "I am going to" into "I'm gonna". The typical mistake is speaking the full written form at home, word by careful word: എവിടെയാണ് പോകുന്നത്?
In this episode:
• Chopping off aanu: the "is" ending
• Shorter time words
• Questions that lose a syllable
• Verbs that shrink
• Words that merge
• An invented scene: fast talk in the kitchen
• Language bridge
• Practice
• Self-check questions with answers
Key phrases from this episode:
ആണ് (aanu) = is. In question words it usually shrinks to a long aa sound.
ഇത് ആരാ? (ithu aaraa?) = Who is this?
ഇത് എന്താ? (ithu enthaa?) = What is this?
ഇതിന് എത്രയാ? (ithinu ethrayaa?) = How much is this?
ഞാൻ ഇപ്പോ വരാം (njaan ippo varaam) = I'll come right now.
അപ്പോ ശരി (appo sheri) = Okay then, so that's settled.
നീ വരുന്നോ? (nee varunno?) = Are you coming?
എവിടെ ആർന്നു? (evide aarnnu?) = Where were you?
ഞാൻ പോണു (njaan ponu) = I'm off.
വാ, നമുക്ക് പോവാം (vaa, namukku povaam) = Come, let's go.
പഞ്ചസാര ഇല്ലല്ലോ (panchasaara illallo) = There's no sugar, you know.
