Bonjour et bienvenue dans ce petit podcast consacré à la prononciation française.

Aujourd’hui, nous allons apprendre une règle très utile : quand est-ce qu’on prononce « ent » et quand est-ce qu’on ne le prononce pas ?

Commençons avec -ent.

Lorsque « -ent » se trouve à la fin d’un verbe conjugué avec ils ou elles, le « ent » est muet.

Par exemple :

Ils parlent.
On ne prononce pas « parlent-ent ». On dit simplement : ils parlent.

Elles travaillent.
Le « ent » final ne se prononce pas.

Ils arrivent.
Encore une fois, le « ent » est silencieux.

Retenez donc cette règle :
avec ils ou elles + un verbe au présent, le -ent final ne se prononce généralement pas.

Maintenant, attention ! Dans certains noms et certains adjectifs, -ent se prononce.

Par exemple :

un client → « cli-an »
un président → « pré-si-di-an »
un accident → « ak-si-di-an »
différent → « dif-fé-ran »

Ici, « ent » fait partie du mot et il se prononce.

Passons maintenant à -ant.

Dans la majorité des mots, le son -ant se prononce « an ».

Par exemple :

important → « impor-tan »
intéressant → « inté-res-san »
étudiant → « é-tu-di-an »
travaillant → « tra-va-yan »

Alors, souvenez-vous :

Ils travaillent → le « ent » est muet.

Mais :

Ils sont étudiants → le « ant » se prononce.

Pour terminer, répétez cette phrase :

« Les étudiants travaillent dans un environnement intéressant. »

Faites attention : dans étudiants, vous prononcez « an ». Dans travaillent, le « ent » final est muet. Et dans intéressant, vous prononcez également le son « an ».

Avec un peu de pratique, cette différence deviendra naturelle !
